Well, I went to the shop this AM and was going to try to turn some pens. I turned on my lathe and it would ONLY run at the slowest possible speed (Turncrafter Pro VS). I could, even, grab the wheel at the headstock end and stop the lathe from spinning. I had noticed some intermittent problems last week with the speed slowing way down and, then, speeding back up. I kind of thought I had a problem in the wings. After turning the lathe off and on several times I decided that the problem was, now, more permanent. After visiting with several friends I came up with 2 conclusions. #1 - The lathe is, probably, still under warranty, #2 - It is, most likely, a problem with the circuit board. I will get more info re: this when I talk to PSI in the am. My frustration is that this lathe is just a little over a year old.

I, now, began to look at all options and, in discussing the same with my wife, I presented 2 choices - repair or replace. Her reply was "do both, that way you will have a replacement if something goes wrong. Besides, I'm sure you will find use for a 2nd lathe." Fortunately JET has a sale on now and I was able to order the JET 1220 VS lathe for $510 (an upgrade as my Turncrafter is a 10 x 14). Ordering from Amazon I even got free shipping. I am getting enthused to get the new "toy"!

Due to all of this problem I am not going to be able to do much turning until I get the JET. However, I have ordered a top of the line pen vise from Paul in OKC and it should arrive in a day or two. I guess I will give my drill press and the new vise a serious workout drilling out a large number of blanks so I can be ready for turning as soon as the new lathe arrives!

Sorry for the lengthy post. I just thought I'd bring all of you up to date!

Taken a side the fact that maybe the lathe malfunctioning just after the warranty was over, was just what you needed to get you a newer machine (toy), the fact that you have a wife making some suggestions on the issue that many blokes out there would only dream of, (I'm OK, I've got a good one in that respect to...!), then we have that great phenomenon, called "excitement" that still within us, regardless if we're no longer a kid, when we get a new toy.

I don't know if it is "Karma", "luck", "destiny", or whatever...! but, I know that, sometimes we have to have these things force upon us, even if they look "trivial" and not that important to some, so that we can be remembered how good that sort of excitement feels, huh...???

Good luck

Cheers

I just got an e-mail from Amazon. My lathe shipped yesterday and should be here tomorrow (according to UPS)! The estimate, when I ordered, was that delivery was another week out so I'm really getting happy (getting kind of anxious too)!

Dan

PS - PSI hasn't even responded to my e-mail about the Turncrafter and its' problems. Oh well, no rush since I will have my new lathe.

That's the thing that I love AND hate about Amazon. They list the "free or cheap" shipping trying to get you to pay more for the expedited shipping, or to apply for thier credit card that offers free shipping, or to buy extras, etc.

But, after you reject all of the credit cards, upgraded shipping, etc. they still ship it the fastest way and get it to you in a couple of days. I have found other companies let is sit in the warehouse a few days before shipping.
