Jim, you are right in that it's sometimes difficult to wade through the Internet Chaff. There is a lot of misinformation out there on finishing. A good place to start is with one of the recognized and generally accepted reference works. Here are three very good ones:
The New Wood Finishing Book by Michael Dresdner
Great Wood Finishes by Jeff Jewitt
The Time Life Series The Art of Woodworking - Wood Finishing
