It is time to change hats and make two long range fishing tackle boxes, one African mahogany and the other American black walnut. The former goes only to the San Fernando valley while the later travels across the country to South Carolina.

Snow is forecast for next week so I'm getting as much done before the temps drop.

Here is the walnut box after four-sided case glue up. It probably takes a village too, but boxes like this use all your clamps often.

Thanks for the photos Mark. As beautiful as the finished boxes are, seeing the process gives a better appreciation for your skills. Very nice.

They are both progressing again after 30 hours of power outage. Here are the cases with tray shelves without clamps. Large 16.5"x16.5" panels are needed for the backs of each box. Trees are not always accommodating so glue ups are needed. The top region of the box has a full size shelf that needed a glue up. The mahogany box is customized with a second full size shelf in the middle and only room for three plastic trays. Not shown are the backs after many light passes through the drum sander which made them smooth and uniform.

Tomorrow the back or possibly both backs will get installed with 12 biscuits.

Very nice Mark. I'd love to see pictures of your shop. My wife and I need to downsize in the next 2-4 years and I can easily play in a much smaller footprint. Just getting ideas - small projects. A single garage size would probably be ample.

I'll post shop photos in the shop section of IAP.

Before it snows I hustled to get the backs on after attaching the trays spacers. Needless to say it requires many good clamps to get it tightened a made a void free attachment.

🎶 Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow 🎶

So after the blizzard snow storm and loss of internet and TV for a couple of days I'm back at it. The front needs to be carefully attached in stages with the hinge mortises routed before the bottom front gets glued in place. I feel better about my skills after a flush up the joints with 180 grit in the belt sander. The joints show little need for putty thank goodness. Even a hair width gap gets puttied anyway. Soon the whole box runs through the bandsaw to cut the top. That is a pucker event!

They look like fishing tackle boxes now since I no longer have additional wood parts. Cutting the tops on the bandsaw is a pucker moment but all went well. Routing the hinge mortises is always exciting, but it too worked out ok. The rocket launchers that will hold rod/reel combos are just screwed in for today and will be glued, screwed and clamped in place tomorrow.

Soon the dread of sanding two boxes will be my job. The joy comes when the finish goes on.

The boxes are finished and have all hardware installed. They in fact are not done until I sand and finish them.
