I own a Sherline setup like this. It's wonderful and VERY precise. I use Millimeters myself for machining, but you can get them in Inches as well. Only bad thing is that they don't work that great for wood turning because you have to mount the rest on the tool table and in order to move the rest on a long piece, you have to most the table by crank, which is in 1 mm increments. It takes a LONG time.
