I have a friend who wants me to try to make some ear plugs for him. they seem single enough, just not sure how to actually hold them on the lathe.

They will be about 1-1/4" OD.

Any suggestions?

thanks,
Nic

There is another active thread on the subject. Near the end, you can see pictures of the work holding gadgets I use to hold finger rings, which are an almost identical work holding and turning task.

When my son was at home for Christmas we turned a couple of sets for him. His lobes are stretched out to about an inch or so. We turned the wood to about the size he wanted, then parted off to the thickness. Then used double sided tape to secure the blanks to a waste block.

He did a set for his lobes and then matching plugs for a couple of punched holes in the upper part of his ears. Those he turned and then just parted off and hand sanded the ends. These were the first things he had ever turned and he did a really nice job. He even sanded them all the way through all the micromesh grits. They were sooooo smooth.

I wish I had taken pix but things were so busy it just didn't get done.
