This will be kinda long but I would like some advice.

I work on one side of my garage in an area about 5 feet by 10 feet. My current workbench is a homemade affair 2ft wide and 5 feet long. I have a jet mini vs mounted in the front on one end and a ryobi tabletop band saw on the side at the other end with a work area in between. The door to my side yard is at one end of the bench. I always open it when I work and run a fan.

I just ordered me a byrne modelers table saw so I can start making segmented blanks and such.

I was going to go to sears and get me a 7ft by 30 inch work bench with metal drawers so my stuff isnt always in my way. When I get it and the table saw I plan on mounting all three tools, lathe, table saw and band saw on the bench. The saws at either end and the lathe in front near one side.

For dust collection now all i have is a fan and a back door i open and I wear one of those cheapie throw away face masks. Im sure it doesnt do any good.

Is there some kinda collection system I could get that I could run hoses up under or behind each of my three power tools that hand a long hose to a collector unit that is small and light enough that when I work I could pick it up and sit it out on the side porch by the garage and pull the dust out there.

Also, that would take care of the big stuff, but I got no shot at putting an ambient dust collection system in my garage. Is there a really good mask I could get for that, or does the dust collection system handle it.

I would appreciate your input. I have allergies pretty bad sometimes and I am sure the wood makes them worse. I would like to solve my problem before too much longer. I really dont want to spend over 2 or 3 hunderd bucks on what ever I do to collect the dust.

I have a wall mounted dust collector behind my lathe with a 5 micron bag. I did not expect it to catch all the shavings when turning larger items, my main goal was to catch the dust when sanding. It is working well for me. I use it now when applying CA. I had given up on using CA as a finish because of the effect it had on my eyes. With the dust collector running I no longer have any problems.

You can see pictures of my set up on my blog.

I got a 'decent' collector, but Keiths is a really good idea if you don't have room. You can get 1 micron bags for that, and if you put a long 4" flex tube - you could move it out to an area where even the smaller stuff is pumped out away.

Peter,
My shop is in the basement so dust control is a must. I have a small 1HP delta DC with a 1 micron bag filter. I use Rockler's 21 ft self compacting hose to connect to my lathe, bandsaw and cut off saw as needed. I also use and would highly recommend a half-mask filter (organic substance type). These may be purchased from Home Depot for $30-40. I developed an allergy to CA, and without the mask and DC, I would not be able to use CA at all.

I can't speak to quality but I do know Harbor Freight sells 2 portable dust collectors. I believe PSI has one as well as does Grizzly. All thes eusints are about the size of a shop vac.

Rockler sells the wall mounted unit.

I noticed you mentioned you have a Delta 1hp collector, what model is it??? I have the 50-180 and I am looking to get a 1 micron bag for it. Where did you get yours??? Thanks

jt,

I don't know if anyone makes a stock 1 micron bag for your setup, but American Fabric Filter can make you one at a reasonable price. They have a good tutorial on dust collector bag design here:

Mike

I contacted them by email yesterday and they sent me some kind of form to fill out to tell them the dimentions. I think your link will help me in determining this. Thanks. I know years ago I remember some company used to make a replacement bag for my unit because it was leaking too much and I can not remember who it was. It was so long ago. I will see what this company gets for the bag.

Guys, please be careful. At 5 micron, you might as well not even have a DC for health reasons. All it is doing it picking up the chips and spewing the hazardous stuff right back into the air more so than just using the machine. Even 1 micron is not really enough. .5 micron is much better.

I know that they make .5 micron filters, not sure about bags. I have a cyclone so I am fortunate to have .5 micron. You might check with Wynn Environmental at http://www.wynnenv.com/cartridge_filters.htm. They have something about conversions for HF DCs!

Thanks Curtis. This will be a good question to ask when I contact this other bag company. The bag I have on mine is a 5 micron but with that said my dust collector is in a seperate room and there is two furnace filters between it and my shop. I never really had gotten alot of dust residue in the room so the bag must be working to some extent. There was and not sure if it still is a myth or some truth to it, but they use to say the more the bag gets filled the better the filtration because the dust sticks to the sides and acts like a filter. My first concern is definetly health and being I need a new bag and after reading your story I kicked myself in the butt and want to do this. I also noticed the efficiency of the suction has dropped off. This has an negative effect in the field in that it does not operate efficiently at the machines. So this will happen. I can not get any larger unit than the one I have and I have had good success with it so will upgrade abit. Thanks for bringing this topic forefront all it be I wish it was not under the circumstances that it happened.
