If I remember correctly, spalted wood still spalts and has live spores until it is (kiln) dried and that kills the live spores right?

Would a microwave kill the spalting or take it and put the wood in a dry area?

I have a large selection of spalted wood lying around (maple, birch, beech), but want to make sure its not releasing live spores into the air when turned..

Thanks Jason

Fine Woodworking is running articles by Sara Robinson (sp?) who is doing PhD studies on spalting. She is identifing the different fungus which cause different colors and how to encourage the best ones. Several of the myths are being busted along the way -- the fungus are the same ones in the soil. The fungus spores are no more dangerous than the fine dust and you need to handle the fine dust as well as the spores.

Oh -- and neither the kiln drying nor the microwave are likly to kill all the spores, but depriving the fungus of water (drying) causes it to stop growing.

Good reading stuff with a lot of reader interest --
