Couple days ago I saw the pine cone pen that William Young posted and got all inspired and fired up.(Thanks William, also appreciate your Utube session on BLO/CA.)Anyway I had a couple of fair size cones and made a pen,I didn't have a single tube kit,so had to make one using a comfort kit without the rubber. It's hard to sorta match up 2 different cones! Now I 'm trying to make a desk holder for it,I'm using a piece of about 3/4 " pine for the bottom,a smaller pine cone fastened to the base and now I need something to fit the pen nib into to hold the pen upright.Don't really want a store bought gold insert, but thought a small pine wood insert would go good, now I need some advice and trick to drilling a tapered hole in the insert that matches the nib taper.I'm thinking about grinding down a spade bit,but would like to know if you folks have an easier or better way. Thanks John

Here you go.....

Here's a pen funnel.....

These should work.

Here's a thought on the desk set.....cut a section across the bottom (widest part) of the cone. Then find a suitable container and the cut section of the cone in there a cast it.

You'll have a cross-section of a pine cone casted and it would make a striking desk set with a pine cone pen.

Thanks Barney,I had checked out the store bought inserts, but wanted a more 'woody' effect. I have a small pine cone that has the bottom flattened to set on a base, the top is where I want to put some sort of nib funnel.I have dipped the cone several times in Deft poly varnish and it looks ok,but need to get a tapered hole drilled in top to hold pen. With smaller pine cones I'm finding that CA is needed to keep the little 'petals' from falling off when trying to flatten the top of cone.I'll conquer it yet:mad:.
