Cocobolo

What is the best way to finish cocobolo since it is so oily ?

Bryan,
Cocobolo actually finishes very nicely just by itself. If you use MicroMesh, by the time you're done the oils from the wood will make it VERY shiny. However, if you want to protect it, you can add a "traditional" finish. I have used BLO/CA many times, and have only had one problem. The problem came before I knew to wipe the turned and sanded blanks down with DNA before applying the CA.

Another real slick way is to CA it...lightly sand and then lacquer it. Super durable and isn't affected by the oils.

I like to finish mine with MM all the way to 12000. It barely needs any "finish" after that! If anything, I add a thin layer of Behlens "Master" turning finish on it, just for some good measure, but nothing else. Its like glass when its done and needs no "coatings" IMO.

On the few I have done, I make sure to wipe down w/DNA between sanding grits, and as a final before finishing. I'm beginning to really like the lacquer, although Enduro is intriguing as well.

It's a lousy photo, hope you can see the grain.
Ended up finishing it with 2 coats of Behlens Woodturners Finish,
and 2 coats of TSW.[]
