There is another thread going on that asks why kits are so expensive and I thought that's a good topic but I'd offer this.

To small vendors like myself the biggest problem is not competition from the big outfits. It is not shipping costs, although shipping costs contribute to the problem. It isn't being able to make a profit, I make a profit for income tax purposes every year, not a huge profit but still a profit. The problem is CASH FLOW.

Without going into all the details suffice to say it takes 200 to 400 retail sales to cover one acquisition of one low to mid priced pen kit in one finish. For a small vendor that is money just lying around doing nothing.

That's why we try to support our IAP vendors as much as possible.

I always try to help the small biz vs the mega companies as much as I can.

Did you know that US labor statistics state that "Small firms accounted for 64 percent of the net new jobs created between 1993 and 2011"? I know a lot of the operations here that we deal with are between 1+10 employees and that's saying lots.

My wife is trying to get her web content business off the ground and will be a at best a small company with less than 20 employees at her peak, so I deal with this every day (shameless plug: Contented Media ) Instead of that one day a year that American Express touts as Small Business day, let's make every day small business day...

I buy from the IAP vendors because I get good prices, excellent service, and high quality products. You simply can't get the kind of personalized support from PSI as you can from one of our vendors. It is good for them, but is is also good for me!

It sounds nice to say that by ordering from IAP members I am supporting the little guy, but to be fair I order from them for one main reason. I feel I get the best value for my dollar plain and simple.

Like everything......you get what you pay for. That is your choice. And if the bottom line is the deciding factor......just remember that there is always someone that is willing to make it cheaper and sell it for a little less. That is the way of the world.
I have bought all my kits from small vendors or IAP vendors. The only other place I look is where I bought my lathe. That I bought from a vendor that was at our local wood show.
I would by everything locally but that is expecting to much. I shop and am always willing to give a little more for that extra help the Vendors here provide. Of course, I am also always looking for a deal.
IAP vendors (in my opinion) are the best there is.
