The silicone caps I have, have a little divot in the center which is kinda nice when parting it out, and they are a little faster and less wasteful than using tape, but I would agree not completely necessary.

What do your caps look like?

I am not affiliated but I have these. I still center my blanks myself when drilling but the center divot here is nice for the tailstock live center when initially parting off lengths of material for each pen part.
