A wrench....

Mark center on both sides of the blank.
Put the drill bit/jacobs chuck in the headstock
But a live center in the tailstock
Rest the blanks against the tailstock, holding it with channel locks
Turn on the lathe and advance the quill into the bit.
Once you reach your depth, turn off the lathe.

I have a 4 jaw chuck now, but did this for tool handles and stopper blanks. It works fine...
