Normal pepper mill mech uses a 1&1/16" hole, so I like blanks that are at least 10/4, to allow for the hole not making it quite down the center (Ignore this if you are making peppermills that are less than 6" tall).

The top of the bottlestopper mechanism is also just about 1", so I like to start with 6/4 or better.

Pepper mills can be made from 4" to any length (longest I have made is 24") A search of the internet shows 6, 8, 10 and 12" are most popular.

Bottlestoppers are all in the eye of the beholder, I don't like big ones-others do. Mine are between 1.5 and 2" overall length (above the bottle).
