So I'm wanting to try my hand at making some basic duck calls. What I mean by basic is I bought a couple double reeds from woodturningz. Over length of the reed is 3 1/2". 2 1/2" to the groove in the reed. I googled some info but a lot of it is people who make their own reeds. I'm not there yet. Lol Instructions for these are very minimal. So this is my perception of what needs to be done.
Cut my blank to desired length. Suggestions?
Drill entire blank with 5/8" hole.
Turn using expansion mandrel.
Was going to finish with Tung Oil Finish. ??
Insert reed up to groove (2 1/2") from end of reed.
It seems to me that this process just seems too easy. Does this sound right. I know they get a little more extensive when you make your own reeds, which I would like to learn down the road. We have ALOT of duck hunters around here and I would like to learn how to make a decent duck call that someone could actually use for hunting. Any and all help and advice will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Bobby

I've made several calls. I would like to someday make my own reeds but it's a complicated process, at least in my opinion. I buy the reed assembly at local woodworking stores. I like making the barrel about 23/4"-3" long. I don't want the call to be too bulky swinging on a lanyard. I also use a call mandrel to make it easy to flip back and forth while shaping. I also make shot shell calls with the brass from a 12ga shot shell. They have reeds with a 1/2" grommet that slides in the hole. Here's a few pictures to give you an idea of what I've made. Lots of fun and a nice break from pens every once in a while.

Those are sweeeet @Kenny Durrant
I really like those shot shell calls. With my shop just getting up, I really don't have any wood right now. I epoxied a couple short 2 1/2" pieces of wood I had and cut it at 4". Seemed to be a little long when I got done shaping it. I think I'll go down to 3" on my next practice piece. Thanks for the response my friend!
