Hello, my name is phillip, and new to pen turning. I am hoping to create some pens with Middle Eastern Flare, or some new design that not that many penturners have inccorporated into their design yet. (Big Wish) just have to make it come true. I apprecaite if anyone could help me to start this right. Just like fathers and Mothers that don't want their kids to make the same mistakes, so they give them pointers. I am hoping that you guys can help me not to make same mistakes in aquiring the tools of this trade. as I am sure some of you would have doen it different if you could. BTW, don't have the lathe and the kits yet so, I am on amission to read on to decide waht i need to get. But have most of the tools as a woodorker, but not a lathe yet

Welcome to the IAP from Tulsa OK. When you get ready to buy a lathe get as big a lathe as space and money will allow. Join a local woodturners club. The club members will often let you use their lathes and always will help out and share tips. Check craigslist for used tools. Buy from the vendors here for great deals that are almost always guaranteed.

Welcome Phillip. Maybe the links below can help you get started. Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

This link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
