Chance Francisco Shue
1998 - 24 August 2011

We adopted Chance from the pound in February of last year at the age of 12. His former owners had surrendered him due to some large tumors. We couldn't let his last days be like that, so I took Charlie (our other black lab) and went to see if they were okay together. (When I pulled up with Charlie, a kid stuck his head out the door and asked if they needed to set up a medium or large cage for him. To which I replied, "I'm not dropping off, I'm picking up")

Chance came home with us that day and we loved him for the next year and 6 months of his life. When we took him to the vet originally, the vet said not to worry about the tumors until he started showing signs of having a problem (nothing we could do about them anyway at that point). This past week, we could see he was having some troubles and we took him in. Lymphoma. Started him on Steroids and the doc was getting us info on new Chemo drugs. Last night, I got him up to use the bathroom, he collapsed in the yard and I carried him in. He passed away a few minutes later surrounded by his family and his Pack.

We were Chances second chance, and he made the most of it in the time he had. We love him and miss him.

Do me a favor guys. Grab that furry critter that's in your lives and give them a hug and a kiss. Chances come around only so often, take them when they come.

So sorry to hear about another family member gone. I've only had one dog that connected with me and I cried like a baby when he went.

Sorry about that. You done good and as he romps and rolls through the heavenly cow pies I am sure he will miss you too.

P.S. Where we used to live was considered free range. Fences were built to keep the cows OUT. It was not uncommon to wake up and find a cow and it's pies right outside the fence, and considering the wildly euphoric look on all of our dogs when they found and dove head long into a cow Pie I decided doggie heaven is filled with them.

I know how you feel. For the first time in 40 years I have no pups running around the house. I had a pair of German Shepherds (Kaiser and Empress), a pair of Labradors (Blackie and Shasta) and a pair of Beagles (Jade and Peanut) over those years. When it was necessary to put down Peanut last year from liver disease, I just could not consider obtaining two more because it was just too darn traumatic for both my wife and myself. That said time does heal the wounds and I am considering another pair of pups.

Sir, I'm a Christian, and I try to always remember a quote from Martin Luther, The man who started the Protestant reformation in Europe.
"Be though comforted little dog, in resurrection thou will have a golden tail too."
I like to believe he really loved the little dog, whatever his name was, so much so, that he thought God would take care of the faithful pets that sometime precede us. Blessings, Your dedication to this animal's end of life is wonderful to read.

Lost a Saint Bernard earlier this year after 10 years. Her older sister, who is now blind and deaf will be the last dog I own. Both were the best dogs I could have asked for.

Good Story

I saw this on line today , I had labs and I know they are the best friend you will ever have

"Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson lay in a coffin, draped in an American flag, in front of a tearful audience mourning his death in Afghanistan. Soon an old friend appeared, and like a fellow soldier on a battlefield, his loyal dog refused to leave him behind. Tumilson's Labrador retriever, Hawkeye, was photographed lying by Tumilson's casket in a heart-wrenching image taken at the funeral service in Tumilson's hometown of Rockford, Iowa, earlier this week. Hawkeye walked up to the casket at the beginning of the service and then dropped down with a heaving sigh as about 1,500 mourners witnessed a dog accompanying his master until the end, reported CBS "

So sorry to hear the lost of very good friend. I lost my Boxer about a month ago. It is very hard to lose very good compaion. Dogs surely give unconditional love though.

Mike I just want you to know I feel your pain.

We have no kids so our pets are our kids so when one leaves us it is so painful.

But know that he was loved and happy with the time he was with you. Sounds like you gave him a second chance at life and put his time to good use.

Our thoughts are with you

This has always given me comfort...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

What a great thread; what a great community

My adult son and I each jointed IAP a month or two ago, and have been absolutely stunned at the quality of all the members of this site.

Russianwolf's post, and the replies, confirm the quality and humanity of the membership. I don't know Russianwolf, but I want to. Ditto for all the other good souls who cared enough to express their condolances, and heartfelt tributes to a good old dog, and his owner.

I have owned 8 dogs during my adult life, and each one was wonderful. I am watching over two 15 year olds as they live out their last few months now, and while they aren't as much fun as they were as puppies, the memories of those past 15 years more than make up for their elderly short tempers.

From a fellow dog lover, Russianwolf, I hope all the happy memories of the good things you did for this old fellow fill your mind today.

As always I know the feeling

My heart goes out to you.

As always I'm reminded " Good friends leave paw prints on your heart"

The Cowboy philosopher/comedian Will Rogers might have said it best when he said "If dogs don't go to heaven, I think when I die I want to go where they go"

Every time I see a post such as this one I get a lump in my gut just thinking of losing "Tony our late life child". He'll be eleven next week, has a little arthritis but other than that seems fine.
Mike I just couldn't do what you, your to be praised.

I couldn't do what you do, Mike! I know that the world is a much better place because of people like you give back unconditionally to those who love us, unconditionally. But, as much as I love animals (especially dogs) I couldn't do it!

At the loss of a good friend and great pet, we had his picture put into a silver frame engraved with "damned good dog". I bet when Chance gets to his final home, he can share his framed picture of you with "damned good man" engraved in the frame. Then Chance and all his friends can compare their pictures of you.

Thanks for all you do!
