At 11:00am on Saturday May 26, 1962 - 50 years ago - my First Wife and I tied the knot, never even giving a thought to the possibility that we would ever see today. She is still my First Wife and if the truth be known she is also my Last Wife.....there will never be another.

We have put up with each other for so long that neither of us can remember when we weren't together - and I sure hope it stays that way for whatever time we have left. Helen says we'll have to die at the same time because neither of us would be whole without the other.

We've made it through 6 kids and 7 grand kids 2 fresh air kids 1 exchange student at least 20 dogs including our 2 current four legged 'children'.

We survived 12 Presidential election campaigns (to be honest the first few - before they started this idiotic primary election method of picking candidates - weren't bad. They didn't dominate the news for 18 or 20 months before the election, only about 4 or 5.) and 25 congressional elections.

We put all but one of our kids through college - our younger son dropped out of college -- he's the one that until cancer struck and curtailed his career was the Chief Operations Officer of a small motel chain, proving that you still don't need college to succeed if you put your mind to it.

We've owned about 30 cars - including as many as 5 at the same time.

We haven't moved around much we've only lived in 4 different houses and 3 apartments (2 of the apartments were while we were waiting to move into our second house)

We operated a small general farm for about 22 or 23 years where we raised beef cattle, horses, market hogs, market lambs, laying chickens, roasting chickens, turkeys, milk cows, ducks, green beans, summer squash, tomatoes, peppers, wax beans and other garden crops.

We have had 5 businesses including 2 right now. We've traveled a little but it has not been one of the 'big' things in our lives, we're more home bodies.

Anyway, it's been a great 50 years --- there is no one whose life I envy Helen has made mine really special.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone! My wife and I will make 43 years in a couple weeks. Our history is a varied as yours, but has been a good life so far.

Best of luck on another 49-50 more years.

CONGRATULATIONS!! What an accomplishment in this day and age. Ain't life grand when you can share it with someone by your side who loves you.
May the Lord bless you and her for your commitment to each other, your children and grandchildren. I also include your four legged "kids".

Smitty, this morning when I awoke, the arthritis in my right hand was about as bad as the arthritis in my hips so hopping out of bed wasn't a pleasure and I was feeling really old!

Then I read your thread and realized how young I really am! We've only been married for 38 years and THAT seems like a LONG time, I am looking forward to 50 myself.

Ya'll enjoy the milestone!

CONGRATULATIONS! You're about to become memebers of a pretty exclusive club. My wife and I will hit 41 years in a couple of weeks and like you I can't imagine not being married to her.

Jim Smith

Congratulations!!
It is a very small club that you belong to, not to many couples even considered staying together even close to (put in any years figure) years, we also said till death do us part, and believed it.
My wife and I made it to 58 years and 5 months, she is now in heaven, Boy what memories I have!!

Long marriages run in my family - My parents were married 50 years when Dad passed on.

My brothers were married 22 (he died at age 51) ,62, 58, and 47 years (all ended by my brothers' death)

My deceased sisters were married 54 abd 39 (her second but his first marriage) years, ended by their spouses death.

My remaining sister has been married 58 years and counting. We tend to take the 'til death do us part' seriously.

Congratulations Smitty!! 50 years and still going strong is a great achievement. We are looking forward to our 50 year milestone in a few, Lord willing. It was 46 years on May 4th for us, and like you and your wife we were made for each other. I'm sure that you have seen the reaction to younger people today when they find out you have been married to one person for many years as we do; they look at us like we are nuts. We are; for each other!

May you have many more years of happiness!!

Congrds on your mile stone, I hope you live to see the next one.......it is a blessing to see a marrage last as long as your........know a days, the yonger folk get married and most of them rearly it the 5 year mark...........

Now I'm on my 2nd marrage and we will hit the 10 year mark this year.....

Congratulations to you both! We are only at 30 and counting, but I also can't imagine not being married to my Wife! Take care of her and yourself, and have a great day!

Congratulations Smitty!

I will be getting married next year to an amazing women after a little over 2 years of dating and 15 months of engagement, and she was my first! We are also in it for the long haul, and have already been through a lot both personally and relationally, but who ever said good had to be easy! I hope you have many more years of joy with the love of your life.

David

Smitty, congratulations to the both of you. Now the next milestone is 60. Hope the health holds up as neither of you want any changes. We'll be celebrating 46 in November and neither one of us would change much.
