At 11:00am on Saturday May 26, 1962 - 50 years ago - my First Wife and I tied the knot, never even giving a thought to the possibility that we would ever see today. She is still my First Wife and if the truth be known she is also my Last Wife.....there will never be another.
We have put up with each other for so long that neither of us can remember when we weren't together - and I sure hope it stays that way for whatever time we have left. Helen says we'll have to die at the same time because neither of us would be whole without the other.
We've made it through 6 kids and 7 grand kids 2 fresh air kids 1 exchange student at least 20 dogs including our 2 current four legged 'children'.
We survived 12 Presidential election campaigns (to be honest the first few - before they started this idiotic primary election method of picking candidates - weren't bad. They didn't dominate the news for 18 or 20 months before the election, only about 4 or 5.) and 25 congressional elections.
We put all but one of our kids through college - our younger son dropped out of college -- he's the one that until cancer struck and curtailed his career was the Chief Operations Officer of a small motel chain, proving that you still don't need college to succeed if you put your mind to it.
We've owned about 30 cars - including as many as 5 at the same time.
We haven't moved around much we've only lived in 4 different houses and 3 apartments (2 of the apartments were while we were waiting to move into our second house)
We operated a small general farm for about 22 or 23 years where we raised beef cattle, horses, market hogs, market lambs, laying chickens, roasting chickens, turkeys, milk cows, ducks, green beans, summer squash, tomatoes, peppers, wax beans and other garden crops.
We have had 5 businesses including 2 right now. We've traveled a little but it has not been one of the 'big' things in our lives, we're more home bodies.
Anyway, it's been a great 50 years --- there is no one whose life I envy Helen has made mine really special.
