Checking in to see if anyone has tried Alumilite Enviroset Epoxy Glue as a finish on mixed media turnings. I'm especially interested in resin and exposed wood. My idea is to compare Enviroset against medium CA. I have not tried this yet, I'm hoping for some feedback and ideas on a place to start. Its pretty spendy especially compared to CA. thx dlb

Just my thoughts but I would be hesitant to use any 5 min epoxy as a finish. It's great as an adhesive to glue tubes or things but I would think it might be too soft or flexible to sand as and level as a final finish and because it's usual fairly thick to mix, I would expect it to trap air bubbles while curing. Plus its UV qualities are usually not real good so it turns yellow or amber with time.
 
Thx John. I read the companies recommendations and they did mention carful mixing to prevent bubbles, good call. I'll research their comments to see if I find something on UV resistance.
I know it will mix heavy so I'll be carful to keep each coat thin. If you have a recommendation on a good finish for mixed media except for CA I would be interested in your input. thx
 
It depends on the material being finished and There are many…. Ca has been the proven finish for durability and shine. Lacquer is my second and I like Lacquer Shot because it sets quickly for multiple layers and self levels nicely with very little work afterwards. All of the friction polishes are my last choice because they just don't last. They look good when applied but if the pen is used or exposed to hot climates they dull and can get sticky. For woods there's the wood oils and urethanes. I use them on flat work but not much for pens. This is just my opinion and hopefully others will comment with their experience.
 
I have heard of a number of people that use UV resin as a finish, primarily for larger turnings. But I agree with Johns assessment above that five minute epoxy would be very difficult to get a clean finish on because of the the bubbles that are inevitable while mixing and the short open time. It also would require, even if you could get it on cleanly without any bubbles, a lot of time in order for it to cure and be able to sand/polish it. Just seems that there are a lot of downsides with little upside compared to other finishes.
