This is an unusual place to post this, but you guys are the closest friends I have on the net, and I know we all have fathers in some way or another. I hope this means something to someone here.

Today, April 18th, would have been my Dad's 67th birthday, but we lost him to a swift battle with Pancreatic cancer on 9-18-01. One of the last memories I have of my dad was sitting with him and our immediate family watching the Twin Towers fall that Tuesday morning. He was very sick but could still barely talk. He looked at my brother and could only say "Crazy people...".

So for those of you who are reading this and still have your father's around, please set aside any squabbles you have with him. My dad was a severe alcoholic, and it caused us a lot of problems. But I know my dad loved me and my family a lot. While we never had time to "reconcile" some of the issues we had, we parted ways knowing that we were best friends, father and son, right hand and left.

My dad had two people in this world that were his heroes. If these two men could have been genetically spliced together, you'd get my dad. So in honor of him, here they are. And a final pic to remember my last real memory of being with him.

John Wayne, the REAL American hero.

George Strait's greatest gift to the world,

I got sent home from school one day with a shiner on my eye
Fighting was against the rules and it didnt matter why
When Dad got home I told that story just like Id rehearsed
Then stood there on those trembling knees and waited for the worst

And he said, Let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love
A secret that my daddy said was just between us
He said daddies dont just love their children every now and then
Its a love without end, amen, its a love without end, amen

When I became a father in the spring of 81
There was no doubt that stubborn boy was just like my fathers son
And when I thought my patience had been tested to the end
I took my daddys secret and I passed it on to him

And I said, Let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love
A secret that my daddy said was just between us
I said daddies dont just love their children every now and then
Its a love without end, amen, its a love without end, amen

Last night I dreamed Id died and stood outside those pearly gates
When suddenly I realized there must be some mistake
If they know half the stuff I done theyll never let me in
Then somewhere from the other side I heard these words again

And they said, Let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love
A secret that my daddy said was just between us
You see daddies dont just love their children every now and then
Its a love without end, amen, its a love without end amen.

I agree. Try not to leave things in an unfinished manner with people you care for. It may be easier said-then-done, but not all good things are easy.

Some of my fondest memories are my dad and I sitting and watching Justin Wilson on public TV. The funny thing was that even with the age diffrent between my dad and I we both laughed at Justin Wilson's jokes and witty humor.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
