Yep, this is what happens when a bowl comes off the lathe and you don't duck fast enough (or don't wear the face shield) This is a 5 year old picture... I've learned to duck faster and to always have my face shield in place.

Let me guess. You were on the inside, getting close to the rim?

Nope, outside near the rim.

Chuck, there's no ducking when it races up your arm at 600 rpm.You took a worse shot than me,I got lucky with a glancing blow.

Here is the culprit of todays action.

Well I was half right then. A conventional scraper will get you in trouble very quickly. I've seen people let the handle go below the cutting edge and get away with it, but only near the bottom. Near the rim is a danger zone with a conventional scraper, since it will self feed. I'd suggest only shear scraping or a negative rake scraper there. You need a poster on the wall, "I had been turning a bowl for quite a while, but I started to wonder why it was getting bigger? Then it hit me!"

I am glad you were not badly hurt.
I had a bowl come off hit me in the lip. Knocked a few teeth loose and had 3 stiches on the inside of my mouth. I was wearing my face shield but took it off to take a drink of coffee when I noticed one "little thing" I needed to do. Bam when I got off the floor drove to E.R. and a few hundred dollars later I went home for the day. So don't feel like you are alone we all learn

Am glad no serious damage was done, apart from hurting your pride.
I was turning a 3 pointed bowl the other day, when I'd turned down to near finishing size a part of it separated and got me in the chest, leaving a nice bruise, just above the right nipple.

Mine was a glancing blow too... it glanced right off the side of my face... and wasn't as big as your bowl... mine was only about 10 inches diameter and came out of a Longworth chuck... at about 450. I was spun half way around and then looked to see if Mike Tyson was in the room... when I flip the switch on now, I make sure I've covered my face before hand... I've still taken a couple of shots on the arms and chest, but this was last shot to the face.

I think what saved me was I was turned sideways. If I was facing it directly,I might not be here.

Thanks for the support and encouragement fellas.I guess we all get a reminder now and then to pay attention and work safely.
