Alan as said I find that actually more striking than some of the incredible segmented stuff you do

keep up the thought provoking stuff and don't tread on the dog this year !

Very attractive. I hope the colors don't fade for the Flame Maple. If it is the same as Box Elder, I have been disappointed after a few years - turned very plain. 👏 👏
I never thought there was a possibility of colour fade. It was given to my Silversmith friend's ladyfriend for her birthday, so I'm hoping that it will be OK. I wasnt aware that Box Elder faded.....though I have not turned much of it.

Interesting - I have a cigar pen I turned from a hybrid flame box elder burl/resin blank some ~12 years ago, and it still looks very red on the red parts.

I didn't know maple did this same kind of "flame" - thought it was some kind of fungus that caused it, exclusive to box elder?

I suspect it has a lot to do with what finish was applied. A CA finish may keep the colors.

I turned a very basic 12" high vase 4"in final diameter about 12 years ago. Initially it had some nice red streaks, but not a highly figured blank at all - inexpensive. I probably used a friction finish as it was at the very beginning of my foray into bowls and lidded boxes. It was kept in my basement as it really was just an experiment in hollowing tool techinque. It faded markedly in a few years and eventually split in several places.

Mark, I'm now thinking that it may not be Flame Maple but Flame Elder. I have little experience in either.

If you told me it was flame box elder, I'd believe you. To my knowledge, box elder is the only species of wood that develops that red color when responding to a fungal infection.
