I have several customers who have been ordering what I call a "2MT Tool Holder" so I thought I might add it to my Vendors Catalog.

I need you to tell me if you think it would sell and if you think you would order them.

The arbors by themselves cost me $15 and I'm charging $25 each for the finished product, that's only $10 for my efforts which I think is more than fair.

The one on the left is for a #3 (1/4") center drill and the others are bored out to .496" for the Hinze Tenon Cutter.

I can make them any size but the max. diameter will be .5" and the max. depth will be 1.5".

Thanks.

Am I understanding correctly: you can bore out the part that holds the tool to any requested diameter & depth up to the limits you gave?

I am certain there are things I've been working around (such as holding things in a Jacobs chuck or collet chuck) that would be better done using one of these, and I can see having a center drill permanently mounted in one like your photo shows would be useful.

Correct Duncan, any diameter up to 1/2" and any depth up to 1.5".

Hi Rick! Hope all is well....and all your snow is melted and gone!!

I read this once and figured I needed to think on it.....as it is basically asking me how lazy do I want to be, as I am not a production turner and the tasks these will deliver duplicate most of why I use collets today.

Well after some thinking/review, and your specific examples of a stubby drill and the Hinze tenon cutter, I would say I would buy these, as the issue I am always trying to get a handle on is consistency - in my tooling and my work habits. If I didn't need to set up my Hinze cutter in size and in the collets twice to adjust to the tenon sizes I use, it would be nice - so I bought two - and dedicated them each to a single size. No more setup and calibration. Same thinking for these tool holders. Put it together, lock it down, make sure it is perfect and never touch it again. Sold!!! I'll take two drilled for the Hinze cutters when you decide...lol.

Not sure how many folks also think like this, but I could see a market - but I wouldn't buy a huge quantity of stock until you have some history for sure.

Let me know when you decide!

Kevin

THANKS for the input Kevin, great info!!

Do you have a micrometer, I'd like to get an accurate measurement of the shaft on the Hinze cutter, so far all my customers just had calipers. Calipers are fine for most things but I need a real precise measurement.

Hey Rick,

I think it is a great idea and if I wasn't mostly using my metal lathe now I would definitely get one for the Hinze Tenon Cutter.

If (when) I get into putting some sort of medallion in the cap or barrel finial, I could see wanting one or two for end mill holders.

Here is that measurement you are looking for. :)

Wow...look at you with a Mitutoyo!!! Sweet!!! lol......

So I took this as a great time to check my measuring tools - close but not exact on my HF micrometer, but both tenon cutters are well used and have some wear and tear on them which may account for some of the differences - #2 is older

Cutter #1 shaft - 12.449 mm (.49011 in inches)
Cutter #2 shaft - 12.443 mm (.48988 in inches)

Both using the same micrometer.

Then I took the same measurements with my linear calipers - two different brands, neither HF, and came to measurements that were different enough that I probably will trash them both. Ah well. Now I see why you wanted a micrometer!! The pressure difference with the linear on a round shaft gave me differences of 0.1, which honestly is not terrible, but it's a bit much considering most everything I use them for is round.

Anyone know of a good Mitutoyo sale?? lol

Hope all is well!!

I should note that my Hinze Tenon Cutter was purchased through Turners Warehouse and not directly from Jim Hinze, so it may be newer than both of yours Kevin (@NJturner).

Rick (@rherrell) recommended this Mitutoyo Micrometer to me and I got it from MSC Direct (also Rick's suggestion).

When I pull it up on their website, it shows a price of $176.40, but then in the bottom center of the page, shows a "Promotion" for $156.80. This is how I purchased it. HERE is a link.

If it doesn't show you the promotion price, you might need to create an account.

All going well. Getting some good shop time today.

Thanks David!

Order placed!! I thought this was going to be well over $200, so a good recommendation- thank you!

I got some good shop time today, but for a very special project. A friend was diagnosed with cancer unfortunately, so I spent time making a really nice wigstand out of a beautiful piece of box elder to provide some help/comfort during treatments.

I will post a pic shortly - but the pics will not justify the thoughts and work on this one.

At times I am beyond happy to have a hobby like this.

Of course Kevin! Paying it forward! :)

Sounds like a great project. Prayers for your friend!

<Gloat mode ON> I have an MSC warehouse about 30 minutes from my house. I can place an "will call" order, wait an hour and drive up there and pick it up. Beats even Amazon and better quality. Hmmmm. I need some rare earth magnets to make refrig magnets... Oh MSC???

PS. Buy good, cry once; buy cheap, cry many times.

Rick - I think this is a wonderful customized offering. I use a lot of tool holders for specific tools rather than using a Jacobs chuck or even a collet chuck. I really like the idea of using one with a center drill. Instead of a tang, can you get the MT2's that are tapped for a draw bar? - Dave

Excellent product and I am sure it will be better than what others offer. I have the Hinze model that I probably bought several years ago.
