First Attempt Celtic Knot

I have been inspired to try the Celtic Knot having recently seen some great Pens with this design. There is quite a lot wrong with this attempt but it was cut free hand on my Bandsaw with no jigs or fixtures so the accuracy leaves a bit to be desired.
I think it's acceptable as most of my pens are sold for charity.
Your comments on my attempt would be appreciated I will make more and try to lmprove but don't want to make things to complicated.

Turned out nice especially for a first attempt! I really like how the clip aligns with the cross section of the knot. I've only made a handful of them. One design element that I like is to layer in some aluminum sheeting on either side of the knot to define the edge and give it some more depth. Anyway, well done and happy turning!
 
For a first attempt and freehand, it's very good!
I've made a bunch of these on the bandsaw and would recomend 2 things. One is make a sled. Even a simple sled would be well worth your time. The second thing is probably more of a personal preference. I much prefer a 60 degree angle rather that the 45 that a lot of guys use. It makes the knot a longer and fills up the blank more.
Just my 2 cents worth.
 
Nice job and especially so, since you did it freehand. I agree with Dale on the 60 degree angle, for some reason I have settled on 53 degrees for mine, but I like them elongated more than the standard 45 degree angle you see a lot.
 
that's a really nice bit of work. I had. number of failures of glue ups before I got it nearly right. I also found I needed to measure and use one pair of edges to measure from , check and define the "true centre" to allow me to drill it accurately so the know was even all sides.

I know what I mean but that may not be easy to understand from my description ( sorry )
 
Well thank you for your replies and tips. I will change the angle and see what I get.

That's why I always use a square blank for these. Do that and most of your issues with Celtic knots disappear.

It starts out square start Ken but by theme you've made all the cuts and glued up etc it can " migrate a bit"
 
Mike, that's a very decent looking knot, especially given that it's your first.
I would'nt have liked to show my first attempt.

Thanks Alan beginners luck maybe. I can see real potential and having read some of the comments about changing angles I will keep going.
 
Michael, I would say that is a very successful "FIRST" !! . . . . Congratulations !!
