Experimenting with different style pens and finishes. I Picked up a couple of pin mandrels and made my first closed end pens. Three different finishes.

First is a slimline in birds eye maple. Finished with three coats of tru oil.

Third is a jr gent closed end pen kit. Dressed in bocote. And finished with glu boost. I struggled a bit with the finish on and near the ends. Sanded through and had to strip it and re finish.

Any idea on how the different finishes "wear"?

My first few pens ever made were OB shine juice. I didn't feel like the finished as long as I wanted. But it is quick and easy and I do really like the feel in my hand. Plus I have always liked the smell of shellac.

I switched to ca after only a few pens as it seemed to be the gold standard for the wood pens that I admired here in the IAP forums. Pens that I have kept around with ca finish look much the same as the day I finished them.

After reading a thread here about others experimentation with pen finishes and also having it recommended as a finish to try on some duck calls I made. I bought a bottle of tru oil. So far this is the first and only pen that I have finished with tru oil so I can not speak to how it will wear. But I love the feel of the pen in my hand. I plan to make a few Bic sticks and finish them with the tru oil. This way I can give a bunch away and ask for feedback.
