Upgraded computer hardware and OS due to recent Microsoft's abandonment of Win 7 (which was still operating perfectly but slowing).

Of course, such a transition is never as simple/straightforward as "they" say it will be .... and .... yeah .... no surprise there !!!!

On Win 7, I had been using a freebee photoediting package called PhotoScape ... there had been (back a few years) no prob installing that.

On Win 10, downloaded the appropriate version (I think) of PhotoScape ... attempted to install from the new download ... NO GO !

Well .... all that happens is a tiny circulating blue arrow in center of screen, going around, and around ... and around ... and around ... ad nauseam forever.

Tried a different freebee photoediting package called PhotoPad ... new to me ... same procedure ... download ... attempt to install ... NO GO !

Exactly same result for both packages. . Both downloads appear in my Win 10 Downloads folder. . Neither wants to install within my lifetime.

Anyone have advice getting either package working in Win 10 ?. I don't particularly want to buy software, as only rarely need very basic functions.

Thanks in advance for any advice ... I'll even thank you again afterwards !!

Mal, you might want to try PhotoScape X. I just downloaded it and it installed fine on Win 10. The X version appears to be the most recent version for Win 10.

I use Photoshop because I grew up with it, so not speaking from usage experience, but from what I know of the industry:

1) You might try the Photo app that comes with Windows 10 - I hear it's much better than what used to ship with Windows. It's probably something you already have installed, and maybe that'll do all that you need.

2) Assuming you don't want to bite the Photoshop Elements complexity bullet, Pixlr is something that I hear good things about that sits in between something like Windows Photo and Adobe Photoshop. https://pixlr.com/

Have you looked at GIMP?

It's open source and pretty handy for being free.

Are you looking for something to remove red eye and add pre-canned filters or something to manipulate images like Photoshop?

I use Paint.Net, which sits in a pretty nice place between MS photo (basic) editor and Gimp (advanced).

@WarEagle90

Thanks, Dan ... is PhotoScape X a Freebee ? . I saw that as one available option but I thought it was a "Pay-For" version.

Thank you for the suggestion ... the editing I have usually done is very simple: cropping, sizing (eg. 800x600 pixel), brightening/darkening .....
.... not really for "photographic" purposes, per se .... more for just the purpose of posting on IAP threads and in the contests.

I will check on Paint.Net ... is it a FreeBee ?

Thanks for the suggestions. . Actually, I just became aware (moments ago) of the editor packaged with Win 10 now ... it might suffice !

But ... as always with Windows ... another unwelcome learning curve, probably. . PhotoScape was so intuitive ... yeah ... fairly intuitive !

Another paint.net user here. Much more capable than I typically use but like you, a lot of cropping, sizing, changing the brightness. Works pretty well for me for years and it is free, though I have used it for so long that I have donated to it a few times.

I've been using GIMP for years. It's pretty powerful - essentially the same as Photoshop - and its free. Works well on Win 10.

The downside because it can do so much, it's hard to decipher how to do what you want to do. But with practice, you can master the basics.

GIMP is great for anyone who wants the power of photoshop but doesn't want to pay for it (or pirate it). It does have a bit of a learning curve but for basic stuff like cropping, watermarks and some basic colour editing it will work perfect.

Gimp is great but as an old school photoshop user it frustrates me that everything is just a tad different and it takes me forever to do anything. Paint.net is free.and.gets me 85% of what i used photoshop for so it is my go to for editing. Got a new.pc last Nov and this thread made me realize i havent even reinstalled Gimp.

A benefit of Paint.net is the amount of information and support from users that is available. It's a great example of open source software...and it's free.
