Tried this combo last night using the non-aerosol BSI accelerator in a sure shot atomizer and some regular white paper towel
It cured "fine" on the spectraply that finished (sanded to 2000 dry, then buffed).

I have NO idea if this combination:
  • Will work with all materials
  • Last as long as the GB product
  • Eventually crack, haze, explode, etc
  • Will ever achieve all of the properties that GB is formulated to produce (flexibility, UV protection, hardness, transparency, etc.)
  • Will do anything else that you experience when using GB accelerator
  • Expand or reduce my carbon footprint :)
I also have a higher end RH meter coming shortly so I can measure the humidity in my shop.

I am merely reporting what I have witnessed over the last 12 hours with one pen. I did wait 2 minutes between applications and didn't sand until 10 hours later (I do that no matter what CA I use).

PS. If I was repairing one of my guitars, I would only use their accelerator.

Tony, have you ever tried the CA pen finishing stuff sold by CSUSA, and if so what are your observations, thoughts?

Thanks,

Don

I have tried Dr Kirk's 3 step and I wasn't satisfied with the results. Many are however many like it.
I have tried close to a dozen polishes and a have dozen processes. For me, it can down to what produced the results that I was happy with and how much effort was I willing to expend.

Thanks Tony. I should have been more clear; I was wanting to know if you had tried their InstaBond CA and accelerator. Thanks for the heads-up on Dr Kirk's - that saves me some money

Yes, I have used both as I have used several other brands including EZ Bond. I never had problems with any. I now use Mercury Flex and Gluboost. I use instabond CA medium when I glue brass tubes into wood barrels.

There are so many ways to approach this. Mine is just one of hundreds. Send me a PM with a phone number, if you want to discuss.

Continuing to test. I finished 2 more. One bloomed (white spots on one of the coats), the other did not. I think I applied too much BSI accelerator.

Going to try again tonight. I just installed my rH gauge too.

Ok. 74 degrees in my shop, 47 rH. I just prepped another one. It appears that the thin (orange bottle) requires very little accelerator (or none as advertised, I think). On my second coat of thin, I produce one small whit spot (have it 2 shots of BSI accel. using my sure shot atomizer. I sanded it right off and the finish came out beautifully.

Seems like one shot of accel. from about a foot away is all that is needed given want I am using and my equipment (indoor climate). I do wait 90 second to 2 mins between coats (I do that any way).

We will see how long it lasts.
