Mark, what exactly are you making two of, there's no picture showing what it will be?

Len

Hi Len,
I will be using the PSI EDC Kit. https://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKEDCDST.html. I have assembled a segmented blank, 4-sided with a variety of polygons, a new design for me. I want to turn and assemble a "practice" pen before the segmented one. So I have a nice Thuyla Burl all drilled, tubed that is good to go. I will also try a "Glu Boost" CA finish for the first time. So there are several new elements for me. I'm not really concerned, just curious if others have any suggestions with this kit.

The pictures of the blank are in my basement camera...

These are the two blanks I will be using. I want to experiment with the Thuya Burl to get the kit procedure and Glu Boost down, then I'll work with the segmented blank.

@Lucky2

Len, I assume it is the relatively new PSI kit ... on their website as "Duraclick EDC" .... weird name .... EDC means "Everyday Carry".

@mark james

Mark, I don't think there is anything unusual about the assembly. . Just be sure that the button click mechanism is NOT screwed into the finial when you are pressing together.

I guess it's possible you might be making the "Everyday Classic" .... an even newer kit, with another weird name and source of confusion possibly.
If this is your pen, then the mechanism is pre-assembled but without the push button. . Just leave it that way and fit the button after pressing.

I think the instructions for both kits are quite explicit and accurate.

Thanks Mal, I'll certainly check. I bought these when I visited the PSI store in Philly a few months back. I'll need to check which iteration this is. I have read that their use of the Schmidt mechanism is a step up, so I wanted to check them out for a few gift pens.
Thanks for the thoughts.

I have not made one of these kit but it is on my short list of kits to try if you don't mind please give an update after you put it together and take it for a spin.

@John Eldeen

John, I have previously reported my "raptures" with the two pen kits I mentioned in my post above. . In my opinion these two kits are the best of the "button click" type across all vendors for all time !! . Sorry, I don't have URLs to give you, but I might be able to go through the search if you wish.

I'll update hopefully tomorrow - both blanks are setting the epoxy overnight.

Agreed. If possible bring one with you to the shop for the meeting later this month. I have been interested in them but would love to handle one first.

I will do that Mike.

Please PM me your address. I won't be staying overnight in Indy as my wife and I are in Washington Court House that week with her parents.

I have made 4 so far. I didn't discover any glitches other than the white adapter doesn't fit the Monteverde parker style GEL refill. I just finished the barrel of the every day classic. It has a longer tube, same bushings, and no adapter (made the tube longer..who would have thunk :)). Enjoy and let's see when you are done.

Here's a glitch, sort of: sometime the nib and the plunger housing unscrew a little bit. This lengthens the barrel temporarily. The first time this happened, I didn't know it was the unscrewing of the parts and thought I was seeing things. Was easily corrected, by screwing back on.

I like the kit. I like all the metal parts. I'm sure the blanks you have will really make them look nice Mark!

OK, so at my age it takes a bit for me to get excited... but a great pen kit will do it I guess 🤭

The assembly for this kit (https://www.pennstateind.com/store/PKEDCDST.html) went very smoothly.

Just a few comments:
1. The mechanism is awesome (IMO).
2. The material left on the shoulder is very substantial compared to other kits. Bushings: Tube end - .285". OD - .435"
3. A tube length of 2.769" is nice to display your blank.
4. I like the feel of the knurled parts.
5. There is a Stainless Steel version.

6. For a first trial, Glu Boost is as easy as I have read.

My wife's comment: "That's a great looking pen for scientists and engineers." I started to say, "Yea, woodworkers and mechanics and machinists also," but she had snagged the pen and was long gone.

Nice work Mark. Looking forward to the segmented pen. Congratulations for success with the Glu-boost.
I suspect Nancy has quite a collection stashed somewhere, since I keep reading that she snatched the pen.

Nice work, Mark. . Thanks for showing your completed "DuraClick EDC" with associated comments.

I agree with you that the click mechanism is AWESOME !!

I also like the style of the pen with its knurling top and bottom, but I think the bottom knurled section could be shorter, giving you a longer barrel section to show off your segmenting skills even more than you will be able to do on your second pen of this type .... which you will show, perhaps, later today .... hopefully .

Mark--your feedback may be tinted by the scent of the thuya burl..that could make my worst day great!! I love thuya.
Excellent pen. I've not put GluBoost on thuya, but have had some Mercury Flex finishes fail on it--i attributed it to the oiliness of the wood, but it could have been the turner!!

I just glued the tube in with veneers and end caps, so I'll finish turning it tonight and try Glu Boost again. If its done, I'll post in SOYP. But I will tomorrow do a longer thread with photos in Segmenting Forum as this blank was a bit trickier as I sanded some compound angles on the same pieces. This was needed to combine the squares and triangles and diamonds together.

Hi Earl, I used 2 coats of each glu boost. There is only one small area where I think the finish is a bit thin, so next time I'll go to 3 coats of each. I really did not have any adherance issues. The blank was bone dry, not stabilized, and seemed very soft - but easy to turn. It is much better than most CA finishes I've done.

Nicely done Mark. That segmented blank looks like it will be a winner. Did you apply the glu boost with the lathe running or off? The last one i did with the lathe off and I think I got a better finish that way.

Lathe off. I'll do a few more pens with the Glu Boost, but at first glance I'm very pleased.
