Final electrical inspection today for my panel upgrade!

When we bought the house, we thought it was 100 amp as it was a 100 amp panel, but it was fed through a fused shut off that I'm sure was 60 amp rated, with smaller wires than I would have liked for 100 amps, and there were a few double taps and other wiring in the panel that didn't look great to me.

I decided to be proactive and upgrade, and figured why not go to 200 amp instead, as the cost of the wire wasn't that much higher, and there'd be more capacity in the future when we add a garage.

So after a few quotes from the big companies for more money than I had, I decided to do the work myself. I bought and studied the code book front to back, bought the correct permits, and made sure to get it all inspected. He gave permission to energize last time, and now this was the final check.

(he even asked 'looks very good - who did this for you' at one point, before he started quizzing me back on my first inspection !)

Inspector just left - passed with flying colours! That's a big relief!

More guts than me. The only thing I know about house electricity is it will kill me or the family if I mess up.

I have no problem wiring lamps, grow closets (veggies not weed) and other small things but when it comes to the house or shop no thank you. I go the pro route or do without. I guess I should change that mind set. If guy who talks to his shoe can do it, I am sure I can.

Seriously. I made a closet for my classroom that I grew strawberries in. I have all the knowledge to grow surreptitiously and I am sure my name is on an FBI list or two for what I bought, but all legal stuff for me. That's my story.

Congrats Andrew you got an inspector that didn't care you never hired his buddies and just looked at the quality of the work. I'm a licenced industrial electrician and with a little study home electrical work is pretty simple. That's why they let you do it yourself as long as it was inspected afterwards. My home on the other hand was done by a so called licenced electrician about 50 years ago and I know it was never inspected. It would not have passed an inspection then let alone now. I am gradually bringing it up to code as time and money permit.

Been there, done that. Running wire in an existing structure, especially an old house with lath and plaster is no fun at all. Congratulations!!!

Two Things Andrew

1. You did right to go to 200 Amps - there is no such thing as too much service. - Heck I put 100 amps in a 400 sq. ft. summer cabin.

2. If you were smart you used a breaker box with twice as man circuits as you think you'll ever need. I have a fairly new (built 2005) house and I have already added 10 breakers - and that's just in the basement.

When I updated my old farm house to 200 amp service and breakers years ago the Power company had responsibility to connect at the weather head and made the input connections to the meter. I had from the output of the meter to the breaker panel main. They really didn't care about any other wiring because it was a 100 plus year old house that originally had two separate meters...later two parallel fuse panels that from the way they were wired I am sure were never inspected.

So I can relate to what you went through.
CONGRATULATIONS

Not many choices, but I got the big one - so I can just run a new line and new breaker as I need! It has at least 80 spaces, I think!

I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow...

Andrew
That sounds about right - you'll be amazed at how often it is just easier to run a new wire even if it is only one additional outlet or a pull chain light.

Congratulations Andrew, I built my new house 3 years ago and had 2- 200 amp panels put in. The electrical inspector for the county said in 28 years he had never seen a dual feed to a single family residence before. I knew what kind of power outlets I was going to need.
