So for the summer i installed a window air conditioner and it worked great. Now for the winter... my shop is small at 12x16. any ideas how i can keep it warm all winter?

I have a 12' x 24' and i use a wood stove... nice and roasty toasty

If you are insulated well, a oil filled radiator style heater will work just fine. We leave one on all winter and when it gets real cold we use two. This is for a 30' x 22' room that has two outside walls. Yes my electric bill is high in the winter, but it is worth it when you are out there as much as I am.

Neil, your avatar has to go. I was freaked out thinking Cav was back. :frown:

I'm looking at one of these http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=44590&cat=1,43456,43465,44590

I'm also looking at putting a ceiling in as well .

Good idea........ I went two winters without a ceiling and everytime it snowed all my tools got covered and it would often be days before I could find my tools!

I have two of these heaters in my shop, one above my lathes and the other above my workbench area. My shop doesn't get really cold but these would make it nice and toasty if it ever did. I had them in my shop in Texas for several years and now here and I love these things. They were the best choice for me.

I got an 80,000 propane torpedo last year. No insulation and ceiling is open takes about 15 minutes when it's 4o's in there to get to 80.

I rarely laugh out loud when I'm alone but Wolftat cracked me up!

May be a little late, but the Borg sells window units that are combo ac and heater. One of those would work nicely in your shop.
Just my 2 cents.

i'm working on a wood stove for this winter. here is my run down on some others that i have been using.
-the oil filled radiator type work great, used one last winter. if you keep it running all the time. takes a while to heat up the whole space.
-i also have the ceiling mount radiant heater over one of my benches. works amazing; if you are right in front of it.
both are good but as mentioned. pricy on the electric bill. once the wood stove is in i figure it will run for free. with a little labor and luck.

My shop is also 12x16, but not insulated. I use a Kerosun kerosene heater and it works o.k. except on some of the very coldest days. Here in Atlanta, it will go down into the teens and on those real cold days I stay in the house and browse my wood
working catalogs and wish books.

I thought about using a small wall hung propane heater but I was scared that the flame would ignite some of the fumes we produce via ca glue, acetone, and other chess. I have about three of these heaters but was scared to hook one up.

What does kerosene run in your area? I have a really nice kerosene heater I haven't used in years but back in January I went shopping for some kerosene and was shocked at the prices. Lowes was the cheapest with a 5 gallon can for $35! It was running almost $8 per gallon all around here!

can you leave it run all the time? the heater, not your tuckus...

Thanks for the link, Steve. Just ordered one. Froze my tuckus off last winter making pens. Now I'm tuckusless. Sort of like having no ascetal.

I suppose you can. Depends on (1) how high you want your electricity bill and (2) how hot you want your shop in the summer.

You could if you wanted too, it would be similar to and just as safe as having a light bulb on only much hotter but you probably wouldn't need to!

I have the identical heaters shown in the Lee Valley ad and yesterday as an example......... I went to my shop at 8AM and it was 63 degrees. I turned both of my heaters on high and started playing in the shop.

By 9AM I turned them both to Low and by 11AM in the half of the shop where the heaters are, the temperature was 69 degrees so I shut both of them off and was quite comfortable for the rest of the day. The outside high for the day was 41 degrees so it was a fairly cold day.
