This is the first time Ive posted something that has nothing to do with pens. I dont think Ive ever really had a reason to gloat here but this made my life time.

To anyone that knows me, they know I love the outdoors. Ive spent more than 30 years in the timber hunting with my dad. I was lucky enough to meet and marry a woman who shares that passion. This past weekend, the LOML and I spent two days together, deer hunting. She had all the action, seeing many deer, and was able to fill both of her tags by the second morning. I only seen one deer all weekend. As it turns out, he is the biggest deer I have ever encountered and it was over in about 30 seconds. lol Now I would have loved to seen him while bow hunting, but who could pass him up. Besides, work and family have kept me from the woods this year so I was happy to fill a tag and a freezer, and to have shared the moment with my wife.

This is my buck of a life time. He has 17 scoreable points (all 1" or more in length). There are 4 small points on the brow tines (all between 1.25 and 1.75 inches), a larger point on the right side sticking out to the side and a couple extra points on a couple longer tines. The inside spead is 18" and the main beams are 23" long. He's estimated to score around 160".

I see that little deer. Just kidding, a great looking specimen of the White Tail. Congratulations of a fine result of your hunt.

Tough decision ahead, make pens or mount the rack. As much as I like making antler pens I think I would have to mount a rack that nice, after all they don't come around very often looking that good. CONGRADULATIONS!!

Great score on your part. And to have the wife with you is a plus. And I wouldn't make any pens from that one. Definately a mount monemt. I got my first in 2 yrs yesterday. Nope no pics but it's in the freezer.

Thanks everyone, and congrats Tim! he will definitely be a wall hanger. It happened so quick I didn't really see all of the rack. I could just tell he was a shooter. Lol. It still hasn't sunk in that he's mine. We didn't put him on a scale but guess dressed weight was around 180 lbs.

Good Buck

Well I hunted for over 30 years and never saw a rack to compare to that one. Great for you. I'd mount the head myself...you could make pens but who can tell whether the pen came from a deer like that or a little ole spike horned yearling.

Wow, a great buck! When I saw the picture I started channeling Bubba from Forest Gump : Mmmmmm, venison chops, venison burger, venison stew, venison sausage, venison steaks, venison roasts, venison chili....................

Very nice. I have a very nice 5 or 6 point Elk rack in my shed that I am trying to get up the nerve to start cutting it up. Looks like you had a great hunt. Congrats.

Thank You All

Congratulations John!!! That is sure one heck of a buck! Must have been one of those O..M..G moments once you saw all of him.

Yea, Im still in the clouds. The land owerner wants pictures and all the hunters in that timber cant believe they've never seen him either. Im kind of glad I was gun hunting.... I would have never pull that off with my bow! lol

Yea, He will definately go on the wall. Luckly my dad is a taxidermist. Ive seen bigger deer with wider and heavier racks but not with that many points or that close. This is the best Ive ever taken and will probably be that way the rest of my life. I can live with that. lol

Thanks Padre..... dont forget Venison jerky and venison sticks! lol

The down side is I pulled a muscle in my back dragging him out and now I cant hardly move. Worth every pain. lol Good thing I dont have to move much to make pens and blanks.

Great buck, John!

Are you going to have him officially Boone and Crockett scored after the drying period? You know if he goes over 160 as a typical it will get you "in the book". I have a Pope and Young 142" 8 pt typical that I had officially scored but never actually entered it! It looks real good hanging on the wall in my den!

I used to be big in bowhunting but just don't seem to find the time now. I have taken many hogs, deer, an axis deer that makes silver on the exotics scoring system, a number of turkeys, and a nice blackbuck antelope all with my bow. Now I just shoot deer out of my living room window! (I live on 15 acres) I don't call that hunting but the deer sure do eat well. I usually take 5 per year which is the limit in Texas. We eat only venison burger through the year that I make myself as well as a lot of jerky! Love me some venison.

John,

That buck's a wallhanger! Diameter too large, antler is too porous in that larger diameter in my opinion. Makes me ashamed of my old Shell Know, Missouri 9 pointer.

What make shotgun did you use, looks like it might be my favorite, Ithaca 37.

Charlie

Wow Congrats John. Thats a nice one. Sorry to hear of your pulled muscle, at the time the adrenaline was flowing and you can spend the recovery time thinking about the one that didnt get away.

Awesome buck ya got John. He will look good on the wall. After a while, you can always trim a point or two for pens. Nobody should notice.

Thank you all.

Curtis, Im looking forward go seeing the official score. I was thinking Boone & cricket was around 175 but even if he doesnt make book he's a keeper! Lol. I hear you guts grow some pretty big racks in your deer in Texas. I don't have as much time for bow hunting either. Part if the reason I gun hunt... To put meat in the freezer. My biggest now kill was only 132". It would be nice to. Hunt from the living room. Especially in Illinois winters. Lol

Charlie , that is an Ithica 37, 20 gauge field barrel. Lol. I bought that gun for $75 when I was 17, from a guy hard up for cash. Best gun I ever bought.

Lucky enough I know some guys who shed antler hunt and give me what they dont want, to make pens from. I wont ever be able to cut this rack. Heck, I have smaller racks I can't bring myself to cut up. Lol

Yeah, it was REAL tough "hunting" last year! A friend called and asked what I was doing. Told him I was hunting. He was ready to get off the phone so I would not have to talk. Told him not to worry. Then he asked if I was cold since it was 18 degrees outside. I told him no, that I was only wearing a long sleeve shirt with no shoes on and that I was watching Fox News! I shoot a .222 literally right out of the window at about 75 yards. Aim for the head for a nice clean, humane shot.

John,
That is one nice buck and a very very nice set of horns. Cabellas buys horns like those, but I bet you would have a hard time taking them off the wall. Horns that many, don't make good pens anyway.

Congratulations John! Now back to making blanks.

That's a keeper for sure. Makes my little 9 pointer look a little small!

Take care of that back.

Great looking deer for sure.

They sure do get big around here living off all that corn.

Congrats form a neighbor down the road.

Greg
