Greg, the color tone was a complete accident. The bowl was going to be red, but I forgot to give it a coat of diluted shellac before applying the dye. It bled through very badly on the end grain. Then I attempted a mahogany dye over the red. Looked horrible. Finally, 2 coats of black were applied. All 3 dyes were Fiebings alcohol-based leather dye from Tandy. Final finish was a couple of coats of Deft gloss lacquer.
The tone is very close to what I have produced with just the 2 coats of black, which Fiebings calls USMC Black. I really like their dye and it is relatively cheap.
By the way, texturing was done with a wire wheel.
