Hurricane Ike dropped a big old rotten Bay Laurel in a neighbors yard. It was badly rotted and full of Carpenter Ants. I brought a piece home since he offered it. Yesterday I started cutting it up to see if there was any good wood.

Much of it was soft and punky but I got several pen blanks and some for small bowls. I soaked all of this in Min Wax Wood Hardener overnight. Today when it was dry, I turned a pen and a little bowl. The pen sold about an hour later to the first customer who came by the house....didn't even get a photo.

But I did get a pic of the bowl. How's this for spalting?

nice bowl, so if you have punky wood the minwaxwood hardner will hold it together pretty good? How big a piece will work and how far does it penetrate. I have some crab apple I would like to do something with thats mostly punk.
