Lots of goodies from my Pith Partner

Marla sent me quite the care package. In addition to a walnut Jr Gent with both segmenting and label casting that included both the US and Texas flags, she also sent along a couple of custom polymer clay sierras she had worked up (good thing for me, because my wife claimed one of them!). And on top of that, she included a collection of local specimen blanks- Sumac, plum, maple burl, apple (my favorite- wonderful grain and looks like some subtle spalting) and ash, along with a chunk of Imbuya. Beautiful work on all, wish my picture taking was half as good as the local photographer I use for my web site pics, the walnut has some wonderful chatoyance that can't be seen in my poor pics. Thanks, Marla!!

Pen by Mike Redburn

This is the pen I received from Mike Redburn. It is black walnut with a beautiful CA finish. Cap, clip and nib are sterling silver, which Mike makes. The clip has red, white and blue stones. Truly a collector pen. He included some very nice blanks.

I'm officially claiming the title of person with the best PITH partner... Here's the awesome pen and blanks I received from Lupe (AKA el_d).

The pen is a long click in black titanium with a clear cactus blank. The background color is a metallic orange. The best photo I could get was outside in the sun where it really sparkles. The fit and finish are perfect. Lupe, if you've got a better pic, please post it.
PITH-2010-1.jpg

The blanks include a nice chunk of Texas Mountain Laurel, several mesquite blanks, some Texas walnut, some homebrew acrylic/wood blanks, and one of Curtis' worthless wood blanks.
PITH-2010-2.jpg

This was my first PITH(won't be the last), and I don't know how I could be any happier with the whole thing. Thanks to those who worked hard to organize this, and a special thanks to Lupe for the wonderful goodies.

Thanks Don

Lots of awesome work from everybody so far!

*Don bites his nails waiting to see what skippy thinks...

Arrived this morning and I'm stunned!!!:biggrin:

I knew Don was going to use some brass and he warned me that it was going to be a heavy weight. Well, I can tell you that it is anything but heavy!!! This will be the very first custom crafted swap pencil I've ever had and I think it's superb!!!:biggrin::biggrin:
Equally great it the Black Ti Closed ended Baron in a fantastic resin. It has swirls of light grey, through several shades of blue, to almost black. I love it. !!!!:biggrin:

Many, many thanks Don. I've never been dissapointed in any swap, and this is certainly no exception:wink:

PITH pen from Craftdiggity (Chris)

When the package arrived with my PITH pen from Chris (Craftdiggity) it was hard to find the actual pen because the box was LOADED with all kinds of extras. It was like Christmas 3 months early!
As for the PITH pen, it was a PSI black chrome dressed in White Alabaster. This thing weighs a lot and sits perfectly in my hand. The photo does not do it justice. You have to see it up close to see the marbling effect.
I can add one more material to my list of "gotta' get some of that to try"!
Thanks Chris!
Cheers
Bob

I have to thank Rob for posting a picture of the pen he sent me as my photo skills are terrible. When he posted the picture he failed to show that he put a lot of fine packing material around it. Not only did my wife claim the pen but she informed my she would like a pendant since Rob included some pendant blanks. I guess since she is a pretty good cook I better keep her happy.

Here's my pith pen I recieved from Jack Barnes. It's a Jr. Statesman made of African Blackwood. The CA finish is like glass and has a depth I just couldn't caputre with the camera. Fit is spot on. I love it, thanks so much Jack!

George (robutacion)'s PITH

George got his PITH and asked me to post these pics for him. This is a closed end platinum jr Gent in screwbean mesquite and warthog ivory, with a little red corian and blue tinted epoxy in the finial. George said he would probably display it rather than write with it, so I put together a little stand out of a piece of natural edge white oak. The Australian Federation Star was turned and shaped, then cast into the finial.

PITH Exchange with KenBraiser

Attached is the teaser photo I took and never posted, two photos of the pen I sent to Ken, and the pen I received in return.

My pen is a Jr Gent II in red dyed box elder burl, blue dyed maple burl, and "plain" maple. The pen is resting on a glass paperweight that I made last month in a glass discovery class. The colors are black red and yellow in the glass.

The pen I received is a majestic squire in spalted sassafrass plus some packing material of sassafrass, oak, etc.

Thanks James,

Certainly was a nice surprise, receiving your parcel, my jaws still hurting from laughing so much...! (oh, that's another story, members don't know (yet...!:wink:).

Anyway, your stand was a damn good idea and I can't believe that I didn't figure it out that the center band was ivory...!:mad:
I knew that was suppose to have some warthog teeth in there somewhere but I was thinking of one half pen with it (like the antler ones) reason why I selected pen 5 (I think) from the pic of your desk and all your writing tools rack, silly me...!

Anyway, the pen has an excellent finish (shine) and I was particularly impressed with your star...!

The blanks that come with it, are what I would expect you to send me, the woods that are common and local to you, I have plenty of the Aussie ones...!:biggrin: Thanks.

There is also another thing that members don't know, there is, this nib went through its "training" process with the pen maker and to prove it is a nice 2 page letter I received, properly waxed sealed and everything...! (yeah, that is part of the story...!)

Thank you very much for your efforts, all most appreciated...!

Cheers
George

Exchange between Buzzzz4 and Janet

Here are our swaps. I sent Janet a segmented Canadian and American currency with blood red segmented cigar.

And Janet sent me this beautiful Navigator. I'm not quite sure of the wood. I think I ended up with the better part of this swap

Thanks!!

Here is my PITH from Kev. We decided to trade blanks from local "timbers" and a $1 from each other's currency. (Gave me a chance to feed my other hobby, numismatics.)

Kev went over board with the packing material. The first picture is of the blanks he sent from Australia. The pen is a Cigar Americana Fountain Pen, finely dressed in Brown Mallee Burl. The coin is the Australian Dollar.

Kev even threw in a great looking box for added measure.

Look, drool and eat your hearts out! I got the best PITH partner in the bunch. :bananen_smilies051:

Apologies to HazzB

I'm bad! Got behind! I had Harry's pen finished on the Monday the 30th. I'd put a CA finish on but was unhappy with it. I sanded it down, buffed and polished the blanks. They looked great (pic 1). During assembly I forgot a piece of the centerband and to make matters worse, the sanding had reduced the diameters excessively. I also found this soapstone to be very soft (note nail scratch in pic 2). Scrap one pen. I backed up, punted and got a totally different pen done and in the mail today. Pic 3 is a teaser. Some of the materials for the pen were won at the Wednesday meeting of Pikes Peak Woodturners. No IAP Chapter but a good bunch of folks.

Side note the demo was done by a Stuart Mortimer from England - - Awsome.

Added an extra teaser!

Here are a couple of photos of the PITH I received from Tim, I have a funny feeling that he loves his desert, and in particular his sundaes. The timber he used is Cherry, curly Maple and Walnut

I found it rather amusing that we both chose to send out a fountian pen to our partners.

Tim also included several nice pieces of timber for my growing collection.

From traderdon55 to rjwolfe3

Here are the awesome pens I got from traderdon55. The cartridge pen has a part of the camos from a serviceman who served in Iraq. It also has a USA clip on it. The antler pen has a deer clip on it. The red, white, and blue centerbands are just great. I am honored to have these beautiful pens. Thanks traderdon55!

Forgot to mention the great Mesquite blank he sent too!

To my Brother from down under,
I was more than pleased to find a Pen & Letter Opener set made of an Australian local timber "Queensland Nut" or Macadamia as most know it. I also received several blanks of other local timbers. Bruce took the time to write in detail naming, explaining and talking about the blanks. I cannot thank him enough for the items he sent.

Thank you again my brother from down under. I sincerely hope our paths cross again

PITH-Tease for EBorraga

EBorraga has been patiently waiting for his pen. It is done, first try didn't work, but this should be just as good. Enjoy the tease.

Pith from EBorraga

Here is the PITH I got from EBorraga. Redwood Burl on a Cigar. Smooth transitions, great work. It had a nice selection of blanks to keep it company while being shipped. Didn't get a picture of the blanks sent.

I am absolutely pleased! All three are much more beautiful in person. Jay does such a fine job with his homebrew blanks. I can't wait to turn the ones he sent with the three pens.

I received my pen from Mark (indychips) this past weekend and it is a stunner. A beautiful piece of Mexican Cocobolo, accented very nicely with 1/2 bands of blue and white corian and a full band of red made from casino dice. Nice smooth CA finish really brings out the color and figure of this great wood, and sets the color to really compliment the Black and Gold Ti on this Sierra pen. It feels like a dream in my hand, and looks the part!!!

Mark (indychips) mentioned to me that he did not have a decent camera and wanted me to get him a photo of the great pen he sent me. I'm assuming that he's going to want me to post photos of the pen I sent to him. Mark, if you'd rather post your own, let me know and I'll pull this post...

Closed end Navigator in Blue Buckeye Burl, with maple bands and maple and bloodwood circles, and a white paper star with a CA finish. I didn't take a shot of the padding in the box, but it included a bunch of various wood that I have far too much of hanging around, purpleheart, canary, black palm, ipe, cherry, blue and green PVC pipe, and probably a few others I've forgotten...

Mark is from Indianapolis, and the cap design is the city flag of Indianapolis:

Thank You Todd for posting the pictures. The stars in the blue corian really shine.
Now for the pen you made me....I hate to admit..........I had no idea that Indianapolis had a flag......But, we googled it and what you did is AMAZING!
Thanks again for a BEAUTIFUL Pen!!

Well Mark, looks like you got a beauty there. Atleast you're not a true Hoosier. Otherwise they might tie you to the flag pole:wink:.

Got a notice for my Pith package on Friday while at work. Wife put it back in the box Saturday requesting redelivery for Monday. Waited for the mail lady Monday (she'll come up the drive and honk). My wife checked the mail on her way to work and it was there already..... She caught the mail lady leaving the subdivision and she didn't have it. Claimed the delivery slip wasn't in the box. So I went to the post office to pick up...they asked me for my notice...duh!!!! Then they proceeded to hunt for it....no luck. Asked for the Postmaster, he was at lunch so they took my name and number. No call so I went back to the post office at 4:30. Postmaster there but still no package. They called the sub that did the root Saturday and he recall a package containing drugs from the VA (Veterans Administration)..wrong package and not mine. Once again they took my name, address, and phone and the postmaster said he'd personally deliver when they found it......Got a phone call at 7:30 this morning saying they found it in the bottom of a sorting bin with several bins stacked on top....The wife said they offered to bring right over but I said just bring with the regular mail. The AO who delivered had the nerve to tell me that if I signed the back the could have just left it....(if they could have found it)....It's here safe and sound.

I'd mentioned to Harry that I used a slim line style at work but had developed an affection for fountain pens...He sent one of each along with an atomizer for the wife and some other goodies...Great pens and the slimline goes to work with me nexr Monday...Thanks again Harry

Rum Pig and I currently have our PITH packages in route to each other around the globe. I am not overly proud of my flag pen, but I did make him a nice pen to accompany it as it travels around the planet.
