When I was a kid, every Christmas my Mom would get out this bowl she had and fill it with mixed nuts (in their shells). I don't remember whom she got the bowl from, but someone in the family must have made. I remember it was made out of Cherry. Anyway, my son gave me a nice chunk of Black Walnut for Christmas. I was looking at it the other day and thought of that old bowl. I decided to try to make one. This be it. I also make a little mallet to go with it to crack the nuts with. I put Oak inserts on the ends of the mallet and on the pedestal in the bowl because the BW is pretty soft to be cracking nuts with.

We had something like that, although not nearly as nice as the one you have made. Brings back some great memories - Thank you!

Very nice looking, and I like the idea of the Oak inserts to provide extra hardness when smashing shells.
