It's a piece of maple crotch that a neighbor had sitting out for trash pick up. I wish I had waited until I picked up some DNA; maybe they'll survive drying...

They are not too big so you can boil them in water, that should protect them. Another way is to soak them in soap water (dishwasher detergent) for a couple of days, that is also know to stabilize the wood considerably. There are many other processes but these 2 are the cheapest and easiest ones...!
