The pet supply store I go to is an independent one, not part of a chain. This probably wouldn't work with a chain, but it might be worth investigating if you are so inclined.
They sell sections of deer antler for $8 to $16 dollars, depending on the size. The owner says it is one of her most popular items. I've traded her a pen or two for bags of dog food. I told her I sometimes made pens out of antler and that she might be able to get her husband to buy some, cut it up and clean it and reduce her price and still make the same amount of money. She said her husband couldn't do anything (lol) and would I do it. I told her I would look into it.
That might be a great idea on ways to supplement your pen turning income if there is an independent pet store near you. I really haven't checked out prices of antler, etc. but it's a thought. Especially if you are somewhere you can go out and get antler for free.
