Well, i finally put the finishing touches on my first homebuilt turning tool. The carbide cutter is a replacement cutter for the Easy Tools series.

Handle is from a piece of 2"x2" oak that i had left over from another project. Square steel stock from HD. The copper ring on the end is part of a copper plumbing fitting.

All in all it turned out ok, and i've figured out couple things to do differently on the next one. Which by the way is already under construction.

Did you grind the seat for the carbide cutter flush and parallel to the surface of the bar or did you give it some rake? Does the cutter rest it's back against the bar or did you leave clearance. I have made a crude one with a cheap mail order cutter, it works but not well. I need to get a cutter as you did that is purposed for this tool configuration. I plan on a circle and square rig. Nice job, handle is a bit fancy for my basic plan, but looking grand does have it's merits!

The cutter is at 0 degrees on the bar. And i stepped the surface at the back of the cutter so that the lower portion of the back side of the cutter rests on the bar, but the cutting edge does not. This will keep the cutting blade secure in its rotational position, but also preserve the cutting edge thats facing rearward.

The carbide cutter blade came from the Woodcraft in Roanoke.

Its embedded in epoxy, my next one is gonna use a set screw system so i can change bars with different carbide shapes on them.
