Anyone here ever built a Gingery lathe?

Dave Gingery designed an aluminum foundry and cast all his own parts, and built his own lathe, shaper, drill press, and miller...

Then he published some books on the subjects at Lindsay Publishing.

Has anyone here ever attempted to build any of his stuff?

Try the HMEM forum. I know someone talked about it before. I made a lathe from all bar stock about 30 years ago from a MAP publication book. Sold it a few years ago on ebay. I recently bought another copy of the book from a guy in the UK. Thought I would like to have it.

It was certainly useable. I did not find it to have the precision and ease of use of a more traditional lathe, but it certainly worked.

If I were to do it for myself, I would probably build the Gingery one as described, then use it to make upgrades for it. That process is described in the books, but I don't think it goes far enough. I would want to do more upgrades than discussed.
