This is an experimental variation on an old theme.

Aside from the execution, I'm not sure whether I like the concept or not. In particular, I know I don't like the lines between the segments. I'm going to try another out of blackwood with a light colored zig-zag.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Very nice. Perhaps a darker wood or a plain wood like purpleheart on the larger area may help camoflage the lines a bit for you but there is a definite potential there

i like the look of that... perhaps you could add some soda can or credit card segment to make the lines look more complete since they'll be hard to avoid anyhow.

Good job on segmentation! I think the visible joints between the segments are almost impossible to avoid. I think the joints give the pen character. Great photo!

Barry, I quite like the pen the way it is. But if you REALLY don't like the lines, you could do it without any. If you have a table router with a sliding mitre then you have all the tools you need.[;)]
