If you have any comments on the youth contests or thoughts on changes that would help post them here.

I doubt we will see a repeat of that conversation, although its possible. There is not much we can do about comments other than deal with them as we go.

1st Draft 14 - 16 year old

Rip it apart guys! I basically just butchered the rules from the last bash but added some things to cut down on the whining and hopefully avoid misinterpretation.

One area that does not effect this contest is the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. This law applies to any website operator that collects personal information from children under the age of13. During the last BASH our resident, self appointed watchdog, moderator and champion of all things good pointed out that the photos that were submitted in the youth contests contained metadata, specifically locations, which was in violation of COPPA. We can assure compliance with COPPA by making direct notification to the parents of the child under 13 that personal information will be collected. Take a look at #3 and #4 of this COPPA explanation. We need to incorporate said notification into the entry procedures of the 13 and under contest.

That was one of the reasons I would not post pictures of the kids and asked the parents to do so. Im pretty sure we would need a permision waiver of some kind to post those pictures. I know our good members dont mind but it would seem better if they did it.

I like what you have added and will use it in the under 14 contest. You have covered it under the rules are subject to change but you might state what you will do in case there are 5 or less entries. Other than that it looks good.

I will do that

Here is the 2nd draft of rules for the 14 - 16 year old contest. Jeff clarified for me that membership to the IAP is open to individuals over 13 so I edited the rules to reflect that. New language is in red, unnecessary language is lined through. Please let me know if you have any concerns with the revised rules.

Well I'll be darned! In the past when I have tried to copy a Word document into a post the formatting gets all screwed up to the point where it is very difficult to read. It seems to have worked OK this time.

Welcome to Summer Extravaganza, Youth Pen Contest for young turners 14 – 16 years old.

This contest is to let our young members and turners compete in a pen making competition within their own age group. This contest is for Ages 14 to 16.

Your age group is determined by your age on the start of the Summer Extravaganza, XXXXXXX, 2014.

Pens constructed from any commercially available* component set are allowed.
No laser work or cnc produced pens or parts are allowed.
Center bands and/or finials may be modified or eliminated. No other modifications to the commercial component set are allowed.
Only commercially available* pen blanks may be used.
No alterations to the blanks (decals, ornamental lathe work, etc) other than turning are allowed.

An individual under the age of 16 is not eligible for membership in the IAP. Anyone who enters this contest must be sponsored by a registered IAP member and the entries to the contest will be submitted by the sponsoring registered member on behalf of the participating youth. The member sponsoring an entrant to this contest is responsible for all aspects of the youth's safety and wellbeing. In the event that the sponsor is not a parent of the youth being sponsored, it is the sponsor's responsibility to obtain parental consent for participation.

LET THE YOUTH MAKE THE PEN! Sponsors must ensure the safety of the youth and should not allow the participant to perform a function or technique that is beyond the skill level. Do not get carried away and contribute to the physical creation of the pen by doing things that the youth is able to do. The role of the sponsor is to ensure the safety of the youth, offer advice and guidance, demonstrate a technique when necessary on a scrape blank, and oversee the process. Sponsors are to have minimal, if any, actual "hands-on" contribution to the creation of the pen that is entered in this contest.

The entrants of this contest must be registered members of the IAP (membership is open to individuals 13 years old and over). The entrants to this contest may enlist the help of a parent or mentor to explain techniques and processes when necessary. Any demonstrations of techniques or procedures by the parent or mentor are to be performed on a separate blank. ALL WORK ON THE PEN TO BE ENTERED IS TO BE DONE BY THE ENRANT. None of the work on the actual pen to be entered is to be performed by anyone other than the entrant.

Entries will be emailed to the contest chair at (email address) and will include the following:
Complete name and mailing address of the youth entering the contest.
Screen name, complete name and address of sponsor.
Relationship of sponsor to youth.
A paragraph or two describing the material used to create the pen, the turning experience of the youth, any problems encountered during the creation of the pen and the solutions that overcame them.
DISCLOSURE OF ANY "HANDS-ON" CONTRIBUTION OF THE SPONSOR TO THE CREATION OF THE ACTUAL PEN.
Up to three photos of the pen. If any photos of the entered pen are found to have been posted anywhere prior to XXXXXXX, 2014, the entry will be disqualified.

All pictures will be posted at the same time to have equal time in the spot light.

The contest will start on XXXXXX, 2014 and entries will be due no later than XXXXXXX, 2014 at 11:59pm EST. Pictures will be posted and there will be two polls to determine 1st place. The first poll will determine the finalists by vote of the membership. Members will be asked to vote for up to, but for no more than, three entries. The 2nd poll will contain the photos of the five pens receiving the most voted in the first poll. In the event of a tie for 1st thru 5th place, that result in more than five photos receiving the five highest total number of votes, all photos within that group will be posted in the 2nd poll. Members will vote for one pen in the second poll.

Rules are subject to change for clarification or safety. In the event of a dispute over the rules the Contest Chair, the Activities Manager or Administrator will make the final determination as to the intent of the rule.

*"Commercially available" is defined as available for purchase by the general public prior to XXXXXX, 2014.

Im not restricting the blanks to commercial blanks for those that make their own in P/C
Which we have had.

I copied and posted the wrong draft in response to Jonathon's request. I'll get the right one posted later. I am trying to do too many things at once and making too many mistakes, which in turn is causing me more work.

Here is the right one. Formatting may be off and in the Word document I attached above I was able to ine through text I was removing and use a different color font for text I added, which made it easier to see the changes. This does not have that so unless you compare side by side the changes may be harder to spot.

Mike R., for consistency I dropped the blank restriction.

Jonathon, you may want to google "Open Office" and download yourself a copy. It is free and will open MS Office documents.
