You have to see this to believe it.

At the risk (certainty?) of being crude, I think that proves that b*lls and brains are not equally distributed! Russ

Thanks. Love to see all the differant ideas. Gives me a lot more to work with. But don't worry about this one hurting me. It is just fun to see it "can" be done.

A fool and his fingers are soon parted........or something like that.

With what he paid in electricity for two machines running, he probably could afford a lathe and do the job properly.

On the other hand.....I might give this a try.....

'Hey y'all, watch this......':eek::biggrin:

Momma droped him one to many times on his head. The sad part is some kid will see this and have to try it. It is just a shame that someone will be hurt.

He kept asking "Who needs a lathe?" I think the question should be "Who needs a brain?"

I know we all try to use the 'right' tool for the job but that is just stupid.

I have to give him a hand. Not a joke! He his smart. He won't hurt him any more than we will. Gotta give it to my redneck brother. For his ingenuis ingenuity that we are know for. And for the two machine electricity thing. It is worth it to do that. Just hurts be redneck.

now none of those comments will be directed toward that guy after some sort of Apocalypse. that will be the guy every one runs to. he will be the one who figures out how to get things done. even with the beer.

Well it seems to me that he has multiple pieces of wood there! Segmenting! It is making beads. This is exactly how I make my pens and it the proper way of doing what I believe is precision turning.:laugh:

Actually I have seen this video before and I am amazed he is still alive or has both hands. I sincerely hope he doesn't get hurt doing this but believe if he continues with this kind of dangerous activity he will be hurt badly eventually. You cannot do this type of thing continually and expect not to have it catch up with you sooner or later.

Don't think I'll be trying this anytime soon. Ingenuity is one thing, but you only do stuff like this when there is no other way and it HAS to be done.

Not so much. People will be going to others who actually remember how to build tools similar to those that were around before electricity.

He could build a springpole lathe for $20-30 in materials and get better results and definitely be safer.

Is this classified as forsee-able mis-use of a product that engineers have to take into account? I hope not. It's people like this, that we have warning label on everything...

"warning, do not try to cut a spinning piece of wood attached to a drill press sideways"

LOL

Looking at where the saw blade was and where his hands, fingers etc were it does not look like it was terribly dangerous. Probalbly much less dangerous than ripping a board with a table saw that has the blade guard removed or lifted out of the way. I wouldn't want to stand next to him while he's doing it but I doubt that he'll ever cut himself.

First thing that came to mind was a classic Jeff Foxworthy routine -- "You know you're a Redneck if ....". Next thing was that once he turned it round he'd take a forstner bit and drill out the cylinder to make a 2X4 beer coozy (wouldn't need anyone to hold his beer thataway:wink:). Next I noted the drill press was not clamped down and I was waiting for the mother of all catches.

Nah, he'll cut his fingers off and sue the manufacturer and win. The rest of us will be forced to pay more for drill presses and skill saws that have safety features that are not necessary if the darn tool was is correctly in the first place.

Now hold on, he has something there. Say you take a floor stand model drill press. Put a wood drive spur in the chuck put a live or dead center in the floor stand part. Just drill a hole and drop one in. Then swing the table out of the way and use it to rest the saw on. You can crank the table up and down with the saw on it as you go. Maybe add a long bolt in one of those grooves in the table so you could use it as a steady rest and Bingo. You could turn stair balusters, table legs, pens etc. Why you could lay it on its side on saw horses and you would have Lathe/drill press combo. We could easily recommend it to new turners just getting into turning that dont have enough money to buy both. "Shucks there newbee yall dont need no fancy lathe, just get ja a big ole drill press off Craigslist and lay it on yalls tailgate or kitchen table and start making pens." Talk about making it easy to drill on the lathe.:biggrin::biggrin:

He must have edited it out but the first thing he said should have was "Hey ya'll, watch this". Ingenuity is one thing but someone with much less experience may see this and end up maiming himself.

I think all of this so far is much ado over nothing. I've seen how circular saws are used on construction sites and to be frank, I've see much more dangerous use of a circular saw than he seems to be doing. It's probably not for someone who's never used a circular saw before but someone who's never used a circular saw before isn't likely to be trying it either.
