Have anyone ever turned yew before and your thoughts? The good, bad, ugly or not worth turning?

I bought some Japanese Yew from a member here that was highly touted. I turned several and was underwhelmed.

As with any wood , you can find the good and the bad , but the ugly will almost certainly be worth turning .

I agree Wayne, there will be good along with the bad. Not too much ugly at least wth this load. All solid no rot or voids.

Does anyone have a picture of the yew pieces they can post?

It was touted as lots of "shimmer" but I just didn't see it - it was quite bland.

There are several different species of yew, and the wood characters are different between them. Just as there are many different species of wood called cedar

I have turned English yew, japanese yew and Pacific yew.

English was the more dramatic grain.

What kind do you have?

I don't know which type of yew I have, the only thing I know is it was cut down during home improvement here in MA. Some of the boards are 10" across

I would go with sapwood/heartwood X-cut , but be careful .

You might check out the British pen turners forum. They turn a lot of yew over there.
