My loving husband has mentioned to people that I have made pens and even gave them my website so, they could look at them.

A gentleman in upper management was inquiring. And after talking on the phone and having lunch with him (yeah, I let my husband join us:biggrin:), he wants a pen from an actual 50 caliber bullet casing that he shot while in the military.
This pen will not use wood or acrylics for the bullet end. He wants something else and is getting it for me.

I'm still waiting on the kit to get the parts from but, I spent some time today working on the casing. He wants it shiny so, I started sanding it through several grits. Down to 1500 grit and it looked pretty good but, I also used Mothers wheel polish on it and now it is shiny.

I will take a picture for your comments. Boy...I hope I don't mess up this thing.

Feel free to let me know your opinion.

Will the spray lacquer work?

This thing is monstrous. It's bigger around than my thumb and longer than any one of my fingers. From the tip of my middle finger to the center of my palm.

I had my husband ask today... he wants it left polished so it can naturally patina. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Looks great, please let us know about "bullet"

Kelly,

I've wondered why the company that developed the pen kit didn't figure out that most anything other than something rose gold color that resembles the real thing bullet would look good. Anything else does not appear to be the genuine article. What I'm saying is, it doesn't have to be a real bullet, just look like the real thing.

On the same subject I've asked the company who introduced the bolt action pen kit to make a real brass pen (shell casing) on the bolt action pen, or at least TN cartridge casing on that particular pen. Their reply to me was rather strange. Well OK I hear you. No real enthusiasm for the idea at all.

Up until retirement I worked in a manufacturing company, the everyday working guy there would destroy a 24 kt gold finish in a matter of weeks. Yes, ordinary brass don't look good, but you aren't going to make it look cheap and trashy after a few weeks of being in your pocket at work. These guys were proud of their pens. Had to show 'em off in their pockets.

Nice project..

I'm sure with the concern you have for this, it will turn out to be a great pen and selling point. You will have a walking, talking advertisement.

He did give me a bullet to use, to make it look authentic. After talking with several people, we've decided not to use it.
The general consensus with the bullet is, they have lead in them which is not only toxic, but can be difficult to drill out. I was told it is sticky and breaks drill bits.
Although the material I will be using has likely been used before, I don't want to reveal what it is until I finish it. If it hasn't been used before, I don't want someone to beat me to it.
It's unlikely it hasn't been used, with all of the resourceful and creative people around here.

Well... I am still waiting for the material to make this pen. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday, but it never showed up.

I have the story behind this pen-to-be.

It's for this guys brother. His brother had just graduated and was excited to join the military. Before he had enlisted, he was out with some of his friends. It was late at night when they were heading home down a road that was receiving some construction work. They came up to a car that was stalled in the road, so he and his friend stopped to help the gentleman push his car off the road when a drunk driver slammed into the rear of the car, severing both of his brothers legs. He never made it to the military, but he never let his life altering incident get him down.

I can understand why this pen is so important to this guy.

Today I finally received the material for this pen. The gentleman was on vacation last week.
Now I can get started on it. I just hope I can do it justice and not goof it up.
Keep fingers crossed...

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I am assembling it now. I have almost ten... yes 10 hours in making the dang bullet piece. It's the only part that gets turned.
I will put up some pictures soon.
