I have been following the threads on Woodturners Finish. It looks like there is at least two manufacturers of this finish.... Doctors and General Finishes. Are they the same? Is there a preference for one over the other?

They are quite different.

As far as I know , Doctors Woodahop doesn't make a product called wood turners finish.

When people here use the term , they usually mean the General product.

Actually he does have two products call Woodturners Finish (different blends of Walnut oil, wax and shellac) - I use Pens Plus on Pens, and Woodturners Finish on bowls, minibirdhouses, etc... Very happy with both. I have also used the General Woodturners Finish - I do prefer Dr's

Mark - We are still talking about two different product companies / lines / formulations.

The doctors product normally used for pens is as you mention pens plus. That woodturning finish us another variation.

But Wood turners finish by general is a slightly different name and a different company and a very different product.

There is one other company behlen that produces a product with the same name that doesn't seem popular for pen turners.

Maybe the similar names are what the OP is questioning...

For what it is worth, Behlen's WTF is also a shellac/resin based product. The guy at our local woodcraft here swears by it. I have used it for finishing several pens and find it to be durable. I am actually going to compare it to pen plus once my order arrives from peachtree.
