I just got my new Pen Pro (Santa was GOOD to me!) I am clueless as to which insert to use for what purpose. I know they are a different radius, but what does that mean in terms of using the tool. For example, which insert for a pen, which for a 3" diameter candle holder, or is it more a question of type of wood vs acrylic?

Mine came with the R4 attached and I have yet to make a change. For fine detail, I resort to my skew or detail gouge, but that is very seldom. I am thinking about getting the round tool for coves and such.

there is not a wrong or correct answer -

The R2 is a good general purpose.

I use the R-4 for general roughing and rounding

I use the square inset to cut small tenons with sharp shoulders to fit into the chuck for drilling.

It is easy to start with the R2 and go from there,

I turned a pen and a weed pot with it today. I'm using the R2. It takes some concentration to keep it level after months of holding the tool at an angle, but I'm really happy with the results. I still use my skew, gouge, and skewchigouge for beads and such, but I really like the way the Pen Pro cuts.

Sharon, I do not try to keep my Woodchuck lever. At least not all the time. Some times I stand it on edge and use it somewhat like a skew, especially when roughing something round. I find that it cuts better and leaves a better surface. Other times it lays flat on the tool rest and works like a scraper. I try to let the blank tell me what it wants to face. YMMV. This is how it works for me, or at least it did before I talked about it.
