My woodworking club has a carver group which my wife wants to participate in. After buying her special glove, books and carving tools I was very pleased that I could make her mallets from wood lying around the shop. If she tires of this activity I will inherit some nice carving tools. The top mallet is made from hickory and the bottom one is made from apple. I finished only with boiled linseed oil. I just guessed at what size to make them so I need to measure some at Woodcraft to get dimensions of the most common size. Comments welcome.

Very nice. I'm sure she will appreciate. The determining factor with carving mallets is weight. The nice thing about your making them is that if you wife says one or the other is too heavy, you can slap back on the lathe and take some wood off to customize.
Look at the pictures in the catalogs. You will see that the heads are tapered, large at top and smaller at bottom. So you could remove wood and still have a proper carving mallet.
