I buy and sell wood in the UK although most of it is for knife making. I was at one of my suppliers at the weekend when he showed me a piece of horse chestnur burr (burl), a tree closely related to buckeye burl. Although the wood is very nice what excited me was the story that goes with it.
The wood comes from one of the estates of the Duke of Buccleugh, but here is the interesting part. When trees were planted on the estate all details are recorded in a diary so the date of planting of every tree on the estate is known. This horse chestnut was cut down 2 years ago but the date of planting is 1776. Does that date ring any bells with my American friends?
