I buy and sell wood in the UK although most of it is for knife making. I was at one of my suppliers at the weekend when he showed me a piece of horse chestnur burr (burl), a tree closely related to buckeye burl. Although the wood is very nice what excited me was the story that goes with it.

The wood comes from one of the estates of the Duke of Buccleugh, but here is the interesting part. When trees were planted on the estate all details are recorded in a diary so the date of planting of every tree on the estate is known. This horse chestnut was cut down 2 years ago but the date of planting is 1776. Does that date ring any bells with my American friends?

Pictures to follow!

What you are talking about, with the history of wood is the reason I do not enjoy making plasic pens. Yes they look nice, but it took a couple of days to produce the blank, where a tree is one and only, and when you know when or where it is from it is the best, consider BOW. To me that is the main reason I enjoy making pens. Oh and also most smell so nice as I turn them, as plastic stinks.

I would love to have apiece of that!!!! If for no other reason than to show my grandkids and tell them it was planted when we first became The USA, does it have a COA ???
