Got two pieces that I'm not sure of the wood type. Would appreciate any help!

The larger piece looks like a grilled pork chop. I too am leaning towards oak for the smaller, I've never really gotten a good handle on differentiating between the different oak species, but if say red oak if I was forced to guess.

I have found that use of a bit of sandpaper makes wood I D a bit easier Jon . Minus that , MRDucks2 suggestion sounds right , but may not smell right . The two drilled holes in the other are intriguing . Was it from a local piece of furniture ? The rays do look red oakish , but what does the end grain look like ?

Actually from a trim piece from a house

How old is the house?
My first guess on the straight rectangular piece resembles some elm I acquired from my father some years ago
